Guest guest
Does anyone know the cause of vertical nail ridges? I used to just have them on my thumbnails as long as I can remember---but now all my nails are like that. I'm certain it's some sort of diet insufficiency but have no idea what. Mineral imbalance maybe? Thoughts?

Mineral imbalance maybe? Thoughts?> The book: Prescription for Nutritional Healing by James and Phyllis Balch says on page 251 that lengthwise grooves or ridges may indicate a kidney disorder and is associated with aging. An iron deficiency may also cause ridges. Barb

Guest guest
hypothyroidism... This is common among those that are hypothyroid. I here it often on the various thyroid boards I'm on. I'm not low on iron... so its not that for me and I have deep ridges on all my nails... I have to keep my nails short because the ridges tend to split once they grow much. The ridges are real thin. You mentioned diet and colon cleansing. With hypoT one has such slow metabolism... it could very well be because we are not absorbing the nutrients or cleaning our colons as we should. Guest guest
On the Ayurveda list someone mentioned it was due to Zinc deficiency, but I have plenty of zinc and still have ridges - i felt it was partly hereditary and partly a slight arthritic condition in the thumb bases which reduces blood and nerve supply & Qi to the nail bed.
