Scientists are working to develop tiny "antimicrobial" defenses against harmful germs. But it may be too late and too little.

The world is undergoing secret testing and counter prevention ion tactics by different countries focusing on germ warfare.

Some scientific think tanks believe, by 2012 the secret germ warfare will peak and at that point of time the human civilization will be challenged with the risk of total destruction.

Not all are that gloom and doom. Scientists in many countries are trying to fight the coming germ warfare ?the world war of the third kind!

Researchers are turning an ancient set of natural microbe-killers - first discovered on the skin of frogs - into novel weapons to prevent and treat disease.

The new antimicrobial systems are aimed at bacteria that resist antibiotic medicines, a serious and growing problem. Doctors and hospitals need new tools to fight microbes that overwhelm penicillin, streptomycin and other standard drugs. Infections acquired in hospitals are blamed for 100,000 deaths each year.

Unfortunately, antimicrobial defenses, like antimissile defenses, don''t always work. In a countermove, some bacteria have developed what amounts to an anti-antimicrobial system - something like the way a hostile nation might put multiple decoys on its ballistic missiles to confuse the defense.

The secret global germ warfare is on. The countermeasures are also on. The biggest question now is will the terrestrial environment be able to withstand the effects of these very serious weapons of mass destruction? The countermeasure can also be termed as another set of weapons of mass destruction.
