This is totally true. How can I say this well I am one of those cures. I had a doctor who was not of mainstream he was a scientist. He claimed the cells that produce insulin in the Islands of Langrahand (I hope I spelled that right) in the Pancreas can be affected by just about anything. He said a virus such as measles can affect them. Anyway he believed all they needed was stimulation. My first blood sugar was 360 the second was worse. The first thing he did was give my mother a diet low in carbs and everything had to be weighed and measured. This went on for six years then after a long rest he began to introduce carbs back into my diet a little at a time like one donut (plain) on Friday night with an early morning fasting blood sugar on Saturday.

Result normal. The next week more carbs and blueberry pie on Friday night with test in the morning. Result normal. Slowly over the next four months I was moved toward a regular diet. Result no elevated blood sugars during the whole time. I was checked for two years first monthly then every three months, then six. I was normal and today I have never had any problems with diabetes.

How did I come to this doctor? Well over a period of three years I suffered from boils and styes and had night thirst, sores that didn't heal and hungry all the time yet very thin. Back then in 1948 blood sugars were not routinely drawn. After many doctors and no success my mom a nurse decided to try an endricrinolgist. That was the answer but it didn't come easy. Albany Hospital in New York State even tried making a vaccine for me but it didn't work. I even got the sulfur and molassis treatment. Everything was tried I was a virtual guinnea pig. Finally my mom took control.

I was only eight years old when this was diagnosed but I heard everything he said and remembered it. I believed in him and my mom who had the harder work ahead. That is controlling what I ate and when. I could never consume anything unless my mom gave it to me. Absolute rule! No exceptions. This meant no birthday parties or sleepovers. Lunches packed for school and that alone was a trick and a half since I couldn't have any more than a half slice of bread no potato chips or twinkies. Boy did she have to get creative.
