[the_octopus] appears that the military had made family contacts of

the bird flu victims " disappear. "

Jeff posted the Boxun news translations at the top of his page.

It also appears that the military had made family contacts of the bird flu

victims " disappear. "

Exerpt:

" The following article dated May 27th reports death of 121 human being, but

I believe this is based on news from Boxun. It says all the family member of

the dead have disappeared, and cannot be found. It says quarantine is going

on. It is interesting that the article says " various " livestocks have died

from the flu. Is it possible for cows, sheeps and pigs to catch the flue?

The bird flu in China is different and a new type. China has kept the human

sequences secret and probably won't give out that data. The boxun reports of

an Ebola like illness could be accurate. Now we hear about a mystery illness

in China, several deaths in the Qinghai area.

It almost sounded to me, given the variety of disease in that area, even

Foot and Mouth Disease, as though there might be the hand of man involved.

Perhaps, a loss of biosecurity at a bioresearch facility.

In any event, the H5N1 has been confirmed by China as a NEW TYPE of virus.

That alone speaks volumes.

First reports of Ebola and Ebola like virus were made in March. Whatever it

is has had time to spread, and it is doing so.

Family of Qinghai avian flu victims disappear after leaking the epidemic's

situation; government continues its ban on news

(Boxun 5/25/2005)

Family of Qinghai avian flu victims disappear after leaking the epidemic's

situation; government continues its ban on news

(Boxun 5/25/2005)

Xining, 5/25/2005 After earlier reports of the tragic death of 121 people

due to Avian flu in Qinghai, the Chinese government strictly sealed off all

news, but some of the victims' relatives were able to obtain relevant inside

information.

Because news is cut off in the epidemic areas, many people who had family

members working in the epidemic areas have flowed to Xining, and gathered at

places where the victims might be. Under the government's direction, they

had previously been uniformly assisted, but when the news of deaths had

quickly spread, the family members were placed under supervision, and

communication with the outside was severely limited. By 25 May,

communication with family members was entirely cut off.

According to persons who have been to Yikekulan, Zheyiguodong, Quanji,

Zhihema, Zhanjiang, and Shairiniang in the past few days, many people have

caught the infection and many domestic animals have died on a large scale.

There is no way to calculate how many people have died. Epidemic prevention

workers have continued to enter the area to promote and administer vaccines,

and after some disinfections, they have left again - those who have caught

the infection cannot understand at this time. According to information from

the provider of these materials, the true scale of the avian flue is much

larger than originally anticipated, and adding to this the portion of local

animals that have been shipped out of the area, especially the large numbers

shipped to Guangdong province. Because of the special characteristics of

Guangdong province, the government is particularly concerned that this will

produce a large-scale expansion, and this is the primary reason why they are

promulgating avian flu prevention across the country.

An informed source claims that what we can understand now is that this

instance of avian flu is not pure H5N1, but rather a new infectious virus

produced from the combination of H5N1 and another infectious virus. But the

symptoms are slightly different from H5N1, especially in its latency at high

temperatures. It is quick to act, but it is contagious. At present, because

the closed Gangcha epidemic area is the primary source of the virus, and

other victims and carriers are all people who have been into the area or the

borders of the area, the actions of the government are primarily to

concentrate on the Gangcha area. Other areas do have infection cases, but it

is comparatively weaker there than in Gangcha. This person also indicated

that some officials have manufactured death statistics, or have listed as

infection and death lists the infections and deaths due to other causes in

order to request more financial assistance from the national government for

compensation and prevention. The State Council is extremely upset with this.

The following list is a portion of the official material. No false contents

have been removed, but the true number of deaths will not be less, since it

is claimed that the forced cremation of the corpses of the deceased has

already been requested.

The situation as understood at present is that the number of deaths and

infections, and their location or origin are as follows:

[all of these are humans]

Yongfeng: 6 infections, 8 deaths

Hongshan: 9 infections, 6 deaths

Zheyiguodong: 9 infections, 12 deaths

Shangyou: 3 infections, 11 deaths

Yikekulan: 3 infections, 11 deaths

Maiduosaizhe: 7 infections, 6 deaths

Zhihema: 3 infections, 9 deaths

Quanji: 6 infections, 9 deaths

Gangcha dasi: 3 infections, 8 deaths

Shairiniang: 3 infections, 6 deaths

Nanbiquguo: 2 infections, 3 deaths

Qiankuoer: 3 infections, 9 deaths

Zhanjiang: 2 infections, 7 deaths

Haowuluo: 4 infections, 7 deaths

Legemurinaqiong: 3 infections, 1 death

Qiejijiangkeri: 2 infections, 3 deaths

Xima: 6 infections, 3 deaths

Xiaobeihu: 4 infections, 1 death

The above is the data reported by the government on 24 May, provided by an

individual on the inside.

At present the relatives providing information can no longer be reached; the

large amounts of medication and prevention work have already been sent to

the primary infection areas, so there is no way to know what deaths came

after.

(Boxun editor's note: Boxun has no way to confirm this information. We hope

that readers can provide relevant information, and that media can

communicate directly with the infected areas to follow leads) (Issued by the

Boxun Freelance Section)

Qinghai government blocks off Internet, stringently seeks out persons

leaking avian flu epidemic situation

(Boxun 5.30.2005)

5/29/2005 Xining Information via Yinchuan: Due to the frequency of the

reports the 9 of us have made about the Qinghai avian flu, international

pressure has been growing on the Chinese government, leading the government

to begin using technological and other means of gaining strict control over

the disclosure of information. At 21:30 on 28 May, the area in which we are

had international Internet access cut off. Even proxy service was extremely

slow, and after a short time would only show " this page cannot be

displayed " , so there is no way for international communication to take

place. In addition, in the unlikely event we were able to load an

international site, before six hours were up, public security officers came

into our residence and examined our computers. On the 28th, 29th, and 30th,

public security officers came to our area six times, saying that people were

spreading rumors to disrupt the social order and leaking state secrets. We

wondered what state secrets common people would know - it was utter

nonsense.

But because the filtering and examination of information by the firewalls

set up by the government extremely limited our ability to send out

information on the avian flu in Qinghai, our information in the future will

be spread for us by a few online acquaintances who are in other areas. Under

the labels " Xining Information via Yinchuan " and " Xining Information via

Chengdu " , we will remain in Qinghai, paying close attention to the avian flu

as well as the evil actions of the government, which is using the flu as an

excuse to seize the common people's property and kill off witnesses.

Rumors of the past few days as well as the actions of the government attest

to the fact that the so-called seeking out of those leaking the epidemic

situation is real, and it is also said that there is a 50,000 yuan reward.

We are extremely angry that in China, in our own country, reporting the true

situation of an epidemic has become the object of a government reward. What

kind of society is this?

We only want the return of tranquility to Qinghai, an end to the seizures

and extortion of the common people by the government, but the facts are

cruel. Out of a consideration for safety we will carefully find out

information about the avian flu. Some of our disclosures in the future will

be realistically verifiable on the spot, while others will not be verifiable

because of safety reasons. Our apologies.

What new type? How can it be more dangerous? Unless it's mingled with a pig

flu, or the Marbug/ebola virus..Or maybe it was made in a Chinese biowarfare

lab. Wouldn't that be ironic? If China made a virus to kill other folks and

had an accident and it has started slaughtering their own people first?

China confirmed Boxun's report on bird flu

(July 13, 2005) Today (July 13), China officially claimed that bird flu in

Qinghai is not H5N1, but a new type. " It is much more dangerous than H5N1 " ,

according to this official report released today.

In an unconfirmed news on May 25 2005, released by Boxun, it stated that the

bird flu in Qinghai is a new form of virus rather than H5N1, " its symptom is

slightly different from H5N1, but it can resist high temprature, faster to

show symptoms and more likely to transfer " .

In a series of reports (released but not unconfirmed by Boxun), it claimed

to have people dead of this virus, but this claim has been denied by the

government.(boxun.com)

It seems that UBI added an avian flu peptide subunit vaccine to the

company's product pipeline.

At the vaccine conference this last March they explained that UBI has

applied a set of core technologies based on designer synthetic immunogens.

Not sure I like the idea of people going round designing synthetic

versions - nor adding avian flus to human to experiment with.

Dr. Chang Yi Wang, CEO of UBI (United Biomedical, Inc., Hauppauge, NY),

today addressed a plenary session of the 7th Global Vaccinology

International Forum on Disease Immunization and Immunotherapy, in Dubai,

United Arab Emirates. Dr. Wang was invited to address the plenary session by

the Forum¡¦s sponsors, the Infections Control World Organization, the

Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates, the World Health

Organization (WHO), and UNICEF. She presented an introduction to UBI's core

technologies for therapeutic and protective vaccines. UBI has applied a set

of core technologies based on designer synthetic immunogens, combined with

complimentary vaccine formulations, to develop revolutionary therapeutic

vaccines for Alzheimer¡¦s disease, HIV, allergy, and veterinary

applications. Most recently, through serological and structural

characterizations of avian influenza virus hemagglutinatinin protein, UBI

added an avian flu peptide subunit vaccine to the company's product

pipeline. Avian flu is anticipated as the world's next pandemic.

New boxun.com translations

The story so far: According to anonymous and unverifiable posts on

boxun.com, a Chinese-language news site that accepts reports from the

public, an epidemic of bird flu is underway in Qinghai, a western province

of China, and has already killed 121 people.

Chinese authorities, although admitting that a large number of migratory

birds in the area have sickened and died from the H5N1 strain of influenza,

have repeatedly denied that any humans have been infected or died from avian

influenza.

I have argued a number of times on this site (original; follow-up; second

follow-up) that there is nothing in the boxun.com reports that answers the

crucial question of their authenticity: Are they independent reports of the

beginning of an influenza pandemic, or are they misinformation planted to

embarass or destabilise the Chinese communist regime?

Hampering the attempts by epidemi.ca and others (especially Dr Henry Niman

and the bulletin boards at CurEvnts and agonist.org) is the poor quality of

the computer-generated translations of the boxun posts. Thanks to the quick

work of a translator I contacted, here are the translations of three of the

most important posts from boxun:

" Virulent avian flu kills many in Qinghai, the government cuts off

information and rushes to prevent an epidemic. " Boxun.com (May 23)

Translated.

" Family of Qinghai avian flu victims disappear after leaking the epidemic's

situation; government continues its ban on news. " Boxun.com (May 25)

Translated.

" Qinghai government blocks off Internet, stringently seeks out persons

leaking avian flu epidemic situation. " Boxun.com (May 30) Translated.

This is the story emerging from these reports:

[in] the beginning of April there had already been large-scale die-offs of

migratory birds in the area, but because information was blocked it was not

immediately broadcast. By the end of April there were continual reports of

human infection, and after the May holiday, some of the tourists passing

through the region had come down with serious cases of the infection,

leading to the deaths of 6 tourists there.

In the middle of April, there was a large-scale infection in Qinghai, with

people and domestic animals showing symptoms of infection. The area is large

and people are scarse, so the wide-ranging infection of humans and domestic

animals is not an obvious problem, but because of the wide-ranging habits of

some of the migratory birds, the scale of the infection showed greatly

increasing range.

After earlier reports of the tragic death of 121 people due to Avian flu in

Qinghai, the Chinese government strictly sealed off all news, but some of

the victims' relatives were able to obtain relevant inside information.

Under the government's direction, [family members of those infected in

[signed]9 youths

My conclusions: This composite account certainly has the ring of truth to it

and is in accordance with the Chinese government's actions during the

outbreak of SARS in 2002. If true, the Chinese authorities are taking a

stunning risk: Trying to quietly stamp out the first cluster of human H5N1

cases before they can spread to China's densely-populated east coast. If

that happens, the virus will surely spread and diversify, winning a

beachhead in the human population from which it will not be easily

eradicated nor contained.

Conversely, that seeming authenticity could also indicate these reports are

being planted by a party or parties who wished to foment fear and unrest

both within and outside China's borders. Imagine for a second that is your

goal: Wouldn't you see the H5N1 outbreak amongst geese as the perfect time

to launch a campaign to spread rumours about a bird flu outbreak? Wouldn't

you take as your template China's own admitted duplicity and repression

during the SARS outbreak? Wouldn't you also craft a way to end the campaign

without revealing its true nature, in this case by planting news that the " 9

youths " have been arrested?

Perhaps that, then, is the last, best proof that China is not undergoing an

H5N1 epidemic: There have been no cases reported outside Qinghai; there have

been no confirmed cases of H5N1 within the migratory bird population outside

China.

Nevertheless, these new translations only underline the urgent necessity for

China to admit independent international flu experts to Qinghai and to

release serum samples from dead migratory geese for sequencing. Now.

How far is China?

In May and early June 2005, anonymous postings surfaced on boxun.com, a

Chinese language website (see peacehall.com), which mentioned 8000 dead

migratory birds as well as 700 dead people at Qinghai Lake, all from bird

flu. There were pictures of birds, perhaps dead or dying, but these were

unclear, like from a cellphone, and one appeared to be doctored. Then China

allegedly arrested the (faceless) group of writers behind the articles, and

it became silent, as far as we could see.

What makes the postings hard to read is the fact that only machine

translations from Chinese (Mandarin) to English exist for most of them.

Hard, but not totally impossible. They take some personal interpretation, or

reading between the lines. Most of the postings are re-posted in machine

translation by Dr. Henry Niman, an American virologist, on his site

recombinomics.com. Two things make Dr. Niman somewhat hard to stomach: he

seems quite focused on himself and his specific theories, and his

commentaries give the impression that they themselves come from a

translating machine, one without a spellchecker. A little change in

attitude, plus that spellchecker, would make him a lot more palatable to a

lot more people.

In the meantime, the claim about the number of dead birds in the early

boxun.com reports has been validated, by the WHO and by China, who released

numbers of 5000 and 6000 respectively (articles in Science and Nature add to

the validation). The boxun.com articles in May specified the same species of

birds that were later confirmed, which further enhances their credibility;

how did they know that?. So while it is obvious that unconfirmed sources

need to be treated with the utmost caution, it becomes harder to ignore the

boxun.com reports: they were right about the birds. And we can not rule out

the possibility that there still is a regime in China that at least at

times, and at certain levels, could be labeled " repressive " , and that may

attempt to silence the bird flu situation. The WHO still has no access to

areas, other than Qinghai, where bird flu has been reported.

The claims of the Qinghai human deaths remain unconfirmed. The WHO/FAO

mission to China in June concluded there were no human casualties, even

though the Chinese said only two people were tested. But, as the Effect

Measure blog rightly pointed out, the WHO has lost a lot of credibility in

the past few weeks, so much so that " now only bad news is believable " . We

will cover the potential consequences of this credibility loss later.

These days, new postings appear on boxun.com. Whether (some of) these

postings come from the same anonymous group is unclear. They describe

individual human deaths, in great detail, complete with specifics about

different strains of bird flu and age, profession and gender of the victims.

The postings are in fact so detailed that there is no doubt the author(s)

has/have a degree of knowledge about the subject, they may even be doctors

or virologists involved in testing of samples. The incidents cover both 2004

and 2005, and took place in many different locations across China: Qinghai,

Hunan, Ningxia, Fujian, Shantou, Zhanjiang are all mentioned.

Remarkable about the details is the variety of bird flu strains that are

described, a total of 10 different ones, including for instance H5N1L33,

H5N1RK7, H5N1RW4. Some are apparently more lethal than others, with H5N1RK7

the worst. 8 out of the 10 strains are said to be confirmed in people. It

gets scarier where birds or people are reported with multiple strains; this

would give the virus the opportunity to re-assort and perhaps recombine into

a strain that could pass easily between people. There are also persistent

stories about emergency hospital isolation wards for patients with

pneumonia. Pneumonia is common among bird flu sufferers.

The past few days, postings on boxun.com go a lot further. On July 15, a

possible connection between H5N1 and Chinese bioweapons research is

mentioned. On July 18, there are, again very detailed, descriptions of an

ebola outbreak in two provinces in southern China. The past two days bring

reports of troop movements near Qinghai, of areas being quarantined, people

being taken away and fights breaking out between farmers and doctors, and

ultimately the military.

For now, all boxun.com reports remain unconfirmed, except for the bird

deaths at Qinghai Lake. And there is still a chance that these are a bunch

of people who want to discredit their government. We do not even know if the

postings are written by the same sources. But the wealth of specifics and

details makes it harder to dismiss them offhand. What seems clear, even

without boxun.com, is that H5N1 is widespread in China, probably more so

than in any other country. Add that to the fact that about 60 people have

already died from bird flu in other Asian countries, while China claims no

human infections whatsoever, and we can not help wondering.

Disease that kills 17 in China remains mysterious

In the past 4 weeks, in Sichuan province, 17 farmers die after slaughtering

and eating pigs and sheep; 41 more hospitalized, many in critical condition;

cases reported in 49 different villages; Chinese official says the deadly

illness was " probably " caused by streptococcus suis, a bacteria usually

spread among pigs, and categorically denies even the possibility of bird flu

or SARS, though no conclusive test results are in; WHO spokesman chimes in,

and even compliments China on its system of disease surveillance; the WHO

should stop making comments of any kind until evidence is available, this is

becoming ridiculous; the symptoms look like H5N1, H5N1 is widespread in

China, and there are no test results; so why state now that the disease

" does not appear to be related to bird flu " ? / RM

Widespread bird flu reported in Siberia

Bird flu cases have been registered in ten residential areas in Novosibirsk,

Siberia, Russia; the Emergency Situations Ministry says on Monday that 230

fowl died over the past 24 hours alone in four areas, while a total of 1,100

fowl died since the beginning of the epidemic on July 21; tests have shown

the cause is H5 bird flu / RM

More cases suspected in Indonesia, no mass culling

Citing a lack of funds and " protection of the local economy " , Indonesia

kills 31 pigs and 40 ducks, all visibly ill animals, in Jakarta suburb

Tangerang, instead of the 196 pigs announced earlier; in a country where 10

million birds have already died from H5N1, the number makes little sense; in

the same region, 3 patients, one of whom died last week, show symptoms, but

" temporary diagnosis " is typhoid; test results for samples may take 7-10

days to come in / RM
