I live in a summer beach resort so am very concious of people being on vacation, they're all around me here.Bush Lobbies Republicans on CAFTA BillBy JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes agoWASHINGTON - In a rare piece of lobbying on Capitol Hill, President Bush appealed personally to fellow Republicans Wednesday to close ranks behind a free trade agreement with Central America that faces a very close floor vote. The House was beginning debate on the Central American Free Trade Agreement later in the day, with a vote coming as early as Wednesday night. With Democrats strongly against it, passage depends on keeping Republican defections to a minimum. The president reminded Republicans that while some might oppose CAFTA for parochial interests "we are here not only to represent our districts but to represent the nation," House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said after the meeting that lasted more than an hour.DeLay predicted a tough vote, but "we will pass CAFTA tonight."DeLay said the president may have won over one unidentified Republican when he noted that Central American countries have contributed troops in the war against terrorism.Bush, who has invested considerable time and effort to winning approval of CAFTA, was accompanied by Vice President Dick Cheney and U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman (news, bio, voting record) at the closed meeting of House Republicans. It isn't unusual for presidents to press their agendas with members of their own party or the opposition party, but they usually do it at the White House.Bush's chief spokesman, Scott McClellan, said Bush planned to address other issues likely to come up as Congress rushes toward summer recess, including major energy and highway legislation.Finding GOP unity on CAFTA could be crucial if the trade deal that the administration signed a year ago with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic is to survive. The Democratic leadership, in a notice Tuesday, reminded lawmakers that "this will be an extremely close vote, and attendance is critical."The Senate approved the pact last month, but the House, with Democratic opposition and a large group of opposing or undeclared Republicans, is a harder sell. The agreement would eliminate tariffs and other trade barriers on U.S. exports to the six nations and increase protections for investment and intellectual property. Democrats say CAFTA, like past free trade deals, will lead to a loss of U.S. jobs while doing little to prevent the exploitation of Central American workers.Republican opposition stems from the jobs issue as well as concerns that the agreement will hurt the U.S. textile and sugar industries.Bush in recent months has held a summit with the leaders of all six CAFTA nations, met individually with dozens of lawmakers and given speeches to Hispanic and other groups promoting the deal, which he argues will also benefit U.S. national security by shoring up Central America's fragile democracies. His administration has also had some success in swaying undecided Republicans with side deals offering protections for sugar and textile manufacturers.Groups on both sides of the issue held news and telephone conferences Tuesday to press their case."Trade creates jobs and lifts people out of poverty," House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said at a news conference with Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and representatives from pro-CAFTA Hispanic groups. "And there's nothing like a stable society to fight terrorism and strengthen democracy, freedom and rule of law."Rep. Hilda Solis (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., said CAFTA was "a bad deal for Central Americans and also for Latinos in this community.""I can tell you that the exploitation of workers will continue in Central America," Solis said. They have sent our men and women to useless wars saying it is for our country and while they fight they are losing their country. They say protect Iraq’s borders while ours remain open. They create draconian laws to protect their evil deeds. "Americans, get off your couch and take back your America!"--------- article follows: Codex Agreement At the end of my talk I will give you the ten reasons why the AFL-CIO says you must vote against CAFTA. Before I get into Codex, let us talk a little about the Free Trade Agreements. First it was NAFTA, now it’s CAFTA and later on it will be FTAA. They call them Free Trade agreements. They should be called sell-out agreements or Global Increment Agreements I, II and III. Each agreement gets us more obligated and involved in a global government. It destroys our sovereignty and Constitution until one day it will be no more! Most of us were all fooled with the NAFTA Agreement. We were told how good it would be for the United States. Yet, today we see the damage it has done. We have lost so many jobs in so many ways. Between Illegals, Visas and Outsourcing we are turning into a third world country. We are slowly losing our sovereignty but thank God for the Minutemen, America’s new heroes. I am sure Bush and Co. were not prepared for them! Now, did you ever notice how so many companies outsourced so many jobs all about the same time? Well the answer is simple. In an article by Robert H. Goldsborough entitled “The Power Elite,” he writes: ‘In the early 60s, when I was a staff investigator for the House Committee on Un-American Activities, I was introduced to Mark Jones, a brilliant financial and business genius who had been advisor to such men as John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Ben Fairless, chairman of U.S. Steel. Often, when Jones came to Washington, we would have lunch and he would explain to me the power structure in America. One day, Jones astounded me with the statement, 'Four men have such massive financial power, through interlocking directorates in corporations, banks, holding companies, foundations and elite policy councils that they virtually control America.' Jones explained that the four men operated behind the scenes, choosing others to front for them either as corporate heads, senators or U.S. presidents. He stressed the fact that they prefer anonymity to publicity because that way, "their power can never be questioned or challenged if the public is unaware of it."’ You can see by this statement that all this is planned by a small group of rich, greedy and power hungry men. Now, today, the same people that told us how good NAFTA was for the U.S. are saying with a smile how good CAFTA is! You know the saying, “You fooled me once, shame on you! You fooled me twice, shame on me!” Yet, some Americans seem to be oblivious to all around them and you could fool them 1000 times. Of course, the greedy ones are counting on this. Also, CAFTA is being shoved down Congress' throat under unconstitutional "fast track" trade-negotiation authority. That way, Congress isn't allowed to change even one word it. That means Congress must either accept the Codex language, or reject all of CAFTA. The special interests love it -- they are betting Congress doesn't have the courage to dump CAFTA. Section 6 of CAFTA would require the US to form a Sanitary Measures Committee to insure entering into a constant process which will harmonize our laws under the terms of the SPS Agreement in the World Trade Organization. Harmonization will reduce the milligram amounts to so called "safe upper levels that will be announced in November. This will make achieving therapeutic doses much more difficult, especially when most of the natural, bio-available supplements will be replaced with synthetics. Synthetics do NOT have the same therapeutic effect. Your health will suffer. Let me also say that there are some web pages that specialize in urban legends. One of the urban legends written on some of these web pages is about Codex. Let me state flatly that Codex is not an urban legend and it is embedded in the CAFTA bill. I have complained to Congressmen about the bill and they admitted it was in CAFTA and I also talked to a vitamin company who verified it was in CAFTA also. The people in the vitamin company are afraid they will go out of business. Let me also say that these web pages that put up urban legends are not infallible. I have seen many errors on some of these pages due to ignorance or disinformation. The latter I have seen quite often lately. The pharmaceutical companies want government to "manage" the dietary supplement industry under Codex in order to drive out competitors so only they can manufacture and distribute vitamins and other dietary supplements. As it already has been done in Europe, the supplements you now take will be available only by prescription and at a much higher cost -- if they are available at all. But "Big Pharmacies" won a major victory in Rome, Italy on July 4, 2005. Vitamins and minerals, for over-the-counter sale will be phased out, almost completely, in every country on Planet Earth. The "German Model" of health care will now be the law of the land - in every land. This gives Codex its final form. What this means, in the United States, is that as soon as CAFTA passes the House of Representatives (it has already passed the Senate), the US government will be forced, by the terms of that CAFTA agreement, to restrict vitamin and supplement sales in accordance with the "German Model" of health care.Another article I read says that the U.S. has already committed to ratifying Codex. Does that mean the vote on Codex and CAFTA in Congress is a phony vote? Are they just going through the motions of a vote? If it passes in the House by a very slim margin I will believe it was.Another point to all this is who are they to tell us what vitamins or supplements we can or cannot use? This is an infringement on our freedom. Also, after so many years of Americans taking vitamins and supplements, how did we lose our way all of a sudden to know which ones to take or not? If Codex passes and a supplement or vitamin is outlawed by Codex and a person needs it to live, what does that person do? Another question is why will a vitamin cost 4 or 5 times more for a lower dosage synthetic vitamin all because you need a prescription? Now let’s see what good Codex does for America or even the world? 1) It makes the Big Pharmacies rich; 2) a person who needs a supplement or vitamin that is outlawed by Codex for an illness will more than likely get very ill and possibly die; 3) Americans who don't have time to eat right will be more sickly because of lack of vitamins and supplements. So basically we will have a unhealthy America. So, how can the Congress justify passing such a bill? They can't! So they just smile and lie! In the Senate where CAFTA had passed, I was not only upset at those who passed it but was upset at the reasons most Democrats didn't pass it. I heard several Senators say the bill wasn't fair to Central Americans and did not mention anything about fairness to United States citizens. One Senator stated that it was unfair to Central America but Globalism was the future and nothing could stop it. I wonder, did anyone ask the American people if they wanted globalism? We are at an important crossroads in America right now. We are at the point where do we do all we can to keep our country or let the greedy ones have their way and we become slaves? I do not know about you but I am an American and will never be a slave. We need to try very hard to get the House to vote no on CAFTA. There may be just enough respectful fear to stop it. We must tell our Representatives exactly what CAFTA is. When I called the Congressmen’s office I started out that CAFTA was not a bill or a treaty, it was treason. This is exactly what it is and this is what should be said to your Congressman. We have been nice to Congressmen for decades now sending them letters, emails and phone calls. Yet, what was the answer to these communications? Nothing, completely ignored! So now, we must talk straight with these people! Still, if they ignore us this last time, there are very few options left because if CAFTA gets in it will destroy our sovereignty and more illegals and other legal immigrants (which are really probably illegal too) will flood this country so much that we will not recognize it. So please call your representative and tell it like it is! In ending this, I'd like to say this is no longer a government of the people, by the people and for the people. They have seized power and no longer listen. They have sent our men and women to useless wars saying it is for our country and while they fight they are losing their country. They say protect Iraq’s borders while ours remain open. They create draconian laws to protect their evil deeds. Americans, get off your couch and take back your America! God bless;Bill Richer The following are 10 reasons to stop CAFTA, are provided by the AFL-CIO. They state that if we're going to save jobs and stop CAFTA the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement we've got to act now. President George W. Bush has moved CAFTA (also called "NAFTA's twin brother") to Congress, and our representatives need to hear from us now.1. CAFTA would give new protections to U.S. multinational companies for operating outside the country. Like companies need more incentives to move jobs!2. At the same time, CAFTA would reduce protections for workers here and in Central America.3. That one-two punch combines to make goods produced in other countries cheaper and less risky for the makers and to make it impossible for U.S. manufacturers to compete.4. When we can't compete with foreign goods, we import more and our trade deficit soars. It happened with NAFTA. Our trade deficit with NAFTA countries is 12 times bigger than before NAFTA. It shot up from $9 billion in 1993 to $111 billion last year.5. When imports and our trade deficit grow, we lose jobs. We lost an estimated 900,000 net jobs to NAFTA.6. You can't believe what the trade-at-all-costs folks are saying about CAFTA. When you hear claims that CAFTA will create U.S. jobs and improve living standards in Central America, remember this: That's what they said about NAFTA.7. CAFTA would hurt, not help, Central American and Dominican workers. Look at NAFTA's legacy: Displaced Mexican subsistence farmers were turned into unemployed masses, far, far outnumbering the few jobs created. Workers who find jobs manufacturing goods for export are out of luck. Overall, real wages for Mexican workers actually have fallen since NAFTA.8. CAFTA would hurt workers who don't lose jobs, too. It would make it easier for employers to fight workers struggling to form unions by threatening to close down. NAFTA did: By the late 1990s, employers threatened to shut down if workers formed a union in 51 percent of union representation election campaigns and 71 percent in manufacturing. That's a whopping increase from the 29 percent in the mid-1980s.9. In addition increased trade lowers wages for low-skilled U.S. workers. Real wages for most U.S. men actually have fallen since NAFTA.10. U.S. workers already are hurting from anti-worker trade policies. Now is the time to do trade the right way by rewarding work and respecting workers here and in other countries. ### News with GeoNotes Viewswww.heartcom.org/blueprint.htm at geonotes To love God with all your heart and all your mind and all your soul, and your Netizen neighbor in our Global Village as thyself.
