The Agency has asked manufacturers toprovide information from their trials using anapproach similar to that used in the evaluation of therisk of suicidal behavior in the pediatric populationtaking antidepressants. This effort will involvehundreds of clinical trials and may take more than ayear to complete. In the meantime, the PHA advises health care providersand patients to be aware of the following: * Adults being treated with antidepressantmedicines, particularly those being treated fordepression, should be watched closely for worsening ofdepression and for increased suicidal thinking orbehavior. * Close observation of adults may be especiallyimportant when antidepressant medications are startedfor the first time or when doses for the specificdrugs prescribed have been changed. * Adults whose symptoms worsen while being treatedwith antidepressants, including an increase insuicidal thinking or behavior, should be evaluated bytheir health care professional. These recommendations are consistent with warningsalready present in approved labeling forantidepressants used by adults.FDA will provide updated information as it becomesavailable.
