Guest guest
I wanted to send this out, and hope its' suitable for this list. Janice. Toronto Young Advocates Human Rights Watch formed the Toronto Young Advocates in the spring of 2003. The group's purpose is to increase awareness of human rights issues and work to expand the protection of human rights globally, through education and advocacy. The Toronto Young Advocates work closely with Human Rights Watch staff and researchers to support the advocacy work of Human Rights Watch, and to engage people in the human rights movement. We hold regular briefings to meet and hear international human rights researchers report on their work in the field. These briefings are the basis of our advocacy campaigns, which aim to improve human rights protections around the world through targeted petitions, letter writing, and direct assistance with research and human rights monitoring. The Young Advocates are currently focusing their advocacy energies on troubling provisions of Canada’s Anti-Terrorism legislation that, among other things, deny persons the right to a fair trial and can even permit removal of persons to countries where they will face torture, contrary to international law. Membership is open to young professionals and the " young-at-heart.” In addition to building an understanding of and respect for human rights, the Young Advocates provide an opportunity for individuals from all backgrounds to learn from each other. Co-Chairs: Sarah Dinnick & Jennifer Egsgard Email hrwya to inquire about Toronto Human Rights Watch Young Advocate membership.
