I was in the A group. By the time I was graduating high school, my grades had slipped and I was associating with C people. An emergency room physician and caffeine, a legalized psychoactive drug, are to blame. One day during my senior year, I broke out in hives. Believing I was allergic to clams, because I had eaten them earlier in the week, a doctor injected me with epinephrine (adrenaline), putting me into acute psychosis. Mental deterioration became chronic and progressed. I was not allergic to clams. I am allergic to caffeine. The reaction occurred from drinking Coca-Cola. Not knowing of my allergy, for the next 25 years I continued ingesting caffeinated products. Physical and mental health deteriorated. Desperately I sought adequate medical care. Contagiously undereducated in chemistry, doctors failed me. As a medical lab technician with a BA in writing, and having worked in a general hospital's laboratory for 14 years, I am knowledgeable in chemistry and immunology. A good health care worker knows that an abnormal laboratory value coincides with an in vivo abnormality, meaning that something is wrong in the body. I was physically ill and knew it. These facts did not come into play when, in 1999, I was committed to a locked ward, where doctors and nurses attempted correlating my abnormal symptoms and lab tests with personality disorder and bipolar disorder, because the very abnormalities affect persons diagnosed with a mental disorder. I suggest we try again. A good doctor diagnosed my allergy. I utilized my recovery well. Ongoing caffeine anaphylaxis is a masked cerebral allergy that targets organs, including vulnerable brain tissue, and alters biochemical reactions. Chronic allergic response progresses: Vascular walls break down, and toxins invade organs, including the brain. Hence, the glassy-eyed look of caffeine-consuming patients diagnosed with bipolar and schizophrenic psychosis. Mental symptoms include attention deficits, loss of insight, focus, judgment and values, delusions, procrastination, anger and a sense of self-loss. Unable to correlate the symptoms with a textbook disorder, doctors diagnose ADHD and/or another mental disorder. Now healthy, I believe I am at the A group level again. I'm working on a book titled: Welcome to the Dance-Caffeine Allergy, a Masked Cerebral Allergy and Progressive Toxic Dementia. It details my needless transcendental journey, my attempts to get medical help, and the chemical imbalances of mental disorders. A. Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., FRCP ©, President, International Schizophrenia Foundation wrote the foreword. It should be in print in 2005, and available from Amazon.com. You may want to start your online reading here: http://members.localnet.com/~redrum/ Ethically yours, Ruth Whalen, MLT (ASCP) All truth passes through three stages; First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident Arthur Schopenhauer -=-=-=-=-=- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=- http://members.localnet.com/~redrum/ Ongoing Caffeine Anaphylaxis, A Progressive Toxic Dementia Known as " Mental Illness " ------ Can you remember your first sip of cola, first chocolate cookie, or first bite of chocolate? If you're like the millions of other caffeine consumers, chances are, you can't. What about birthday parties, Easters, and Valentine's Day? Do you recall nibbling on chocolate treats? Pastries and candy? And Halloween? Wasn't it fun hanging the neighborhood with your chums, collecting chocolate goodies, and washing them down with cola? Well, the truth is sometimes hard to comprehend, especially as you age, step up your caffeine intake and suffer symptoms of what doctors call " ADHD. " Memories become a little foggy, and focus disappears. You seek medical help for deteriorating mental skills and leave the doctor's office with a prescription for ritalin or another drug, which you think will help you focus. But the doctor forgot to tell you that if you use a stimulant with caffeine you will develop psychosis: delirium, delusions, mania, and loss of insight, judgment and values. The doctor neglected to ask about your caffeine intake and mention that caffeine in chronic (daily) amounts will cause restlessness and a mental fog, " ADHD. " .. Have you kept inner demons to yourself and tried skipping over the " ADHD " stage? After all, if you tell anyone how crummy you feel and that you think you're losing your mind, people will think you are mentally ill. So, you drink your morning cola or coffee and hope to get through another day. But the mental symptoms are still there and you believe you are going crazy. You don't feel like you anymore. " Someone has got to help me, " you naively think. Yet, no matter how many times you speak with a doctor, any doctor, every doctor, the best in the field, the worst in the field, it seems that doctors don't understand. In fact, you think they believe you're a hypochondriac, making up symptoms, because you have too much time on your hands in your " anxious " and " panic " ridden state. For anxiety, you are given tranquilizers. And you take the medication with a glass of cola. Later, you reach for your tea and chocolate dessert. Days and months pass. Still feeling lousy, not at all like the old you, you keep seeking medical help for odd physical and mental symptoms. And still receive no relief. Eventually you feel a little better, not as confused, not as anxious. You can stay up longer, perform tasks longer, and with mixed confidence, after changing your mind a few times, and probably a few more, you make decisions. You believe yourself so good at decision making that you help others with their problems, which, by the way, are none of your business. Some may accuse you of being " codependent, " when the truth is, in your caffeine psychosis you need to talk. And when speaking, you must change subjects before the next thought rushes into your head in the " flight of ideas " notion of things. Why are you so talkative, so friendly? You never used to be like this. " Oh well, " you think. " It will pass. " And you sip a little cola. With symptoms progressing, eventually you can't sense that anything is different. That's what happens when the brain is poisoned. Chronic caffeine intake led to organ poisoning and malfunction, including brain malfunction. As symptoms progress, with you laughing one day, or minute, and crying the next, and with the mind spinning, rattling, obsessing, unable to completely focus or rationalize, medical persons diagnose " OCD, " " bipolar disorder, " and/or " schizophrenia. " Humbug! According to the FDA, caffeine is a GRAS (generally regarded as safe) agent. But according to chemical manufacturers, caffeine is toxic when swallowed and harmful when inhaled. (You will find manufacturers' safety and data sheets (MSDS) on the web. You'll have to look.) So, if you use caffeine in any form, there's a high probability that you DON'T suffer from a made-up disorder: ADHD, anxiety, panic, OCD, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Due to daily drug intake, perhaps you developed a drug allergy--an allergy to caffeine, and are suffering from ongoing caffeine anaphylaxis, a progressively deteriorating preventable allergic condition and toxic dementia. " But the doctors claim mental illness is genetic, " you say. Then listen to them. Take the lithium, the phenothiazines, the benzodiazepines, neurontin...clonapin.... Take them all. And ingest caffeine, every day, like you have since childhood. Why not give it to your children? Pack their lunch boxes with the stimulant. Feed a few chocolate snaps to the dog. You may find relief but will never be cured. Organs will fail. Still, sit with a therapist. Chatter away and pay the listener who is undereducated or not at all in chemistry. You've a better chance that your auto mechanic knows more about the intricacies of the brain. In 1948, it was known that anyone talking about private matters is organically ill. Has the therapist ever mentioned that? Nope. After all, you're paying the therapist's mortgage. And you're paying some hefty life dues. Your personal, educational, work and social life are in ruins. And you don't feel well. Have doctors given you a logical reason for those abnormal lab tests? Of course not. They assume that mentally ill people are supposed to have abnormal lab results, yet don't know why. However, according to lab standards, every abnormal test is indicative of a physical disorder. That's why lab tests are performed. You trust doctors to find a genetic cause of mental illness? They've had more than a century to do it. Time's up. Let's thank them for playing, because you likely suffer from a simple condition, an allergy to caffeine. Doctors lacked the common sense to figure that out, so, really, there's no time left for the dilly dally. Caffeine allergic persons have lost enough time, money and energy. Educated in chemistry and immunology, I'm a truth teller, like A. Hoffer M.D., Ph.D., Andrew Saul, Ph.D., the staff at Safe Harbor, Medical Veritas' staff, and the handful of others you may stumble across on the web. Truth is good. It helps people. Do you remember parking your stingray bicycle, sitting on the curb with your friend, eating a chocolate covered ice cream treat, and then pedaling off with the wind? How about drinking a half a half pint of chocolate milk at lunch, and then attending class? Unable to concentrate, you may have wanted to be anywhere but in English or math class, as you wiggled in your seat. Ongoing allergic response to caffeine begins with symptoms known as " attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. " All those times you thought you were hyperactive, or jumpy, you were being " stung, " similar to the reaction a person allergic to bees experiences after being stung by a bee. Just like a person allergic to peanuts experiences after eating a peanut. Anaphylaxis makes you feel like you are on edge, or ready to jump out of your skin. It causes the " fight or flight " response, mistaken for panic and anxiety. Yet, eventually you can't tell. Caffeine tolerance disguises this. Allergic effects of caffeine increase with age as you step up your caffeine intake. As ongoing caffeine anaphylaxis progresses, it generates anxiety, OCD, BPD and schizophrenia. Symptoms of anxiety decrease as the brain becomes more poisoned. Caffeine tolerance builds and you keep getting sicker and higher. And yet, you never know. Your friend and enemy, adrenaline, is there to help. Adrenaline increases when you use caffeine. Adrenaline is the hallmark drug for anaphylaxis. It minimizes the allergic reaction at the brain's expense. When you remain unaware of your allergic response to caffeine and continue ingesting caffeine, adrenaline and other toxins soak into your cells, including your brain cells. That's why you've felt a little puffy. Yes, caffeine decreases allergic symptoms. But the very substance that reduces allergic symptoms makes a person allergic to it. Doctors haven't figured this out. They've been busy drinking coffee and playing Santa Claus, shaking hands with pharmaceutical staff and handing out psychiatric pills. Contagiously undereducated in chemistry, doctors didn't spend the time or put in the effort to help you. It was easier for them to diagnose a mental disorder. In 1936, Dr. McManamy and Dr. Schube treated a young caffeine allergic woman thought to be a manic-depressant with anxiety. The good doctors predicted that in the future doctors would overlook physical symptoms because they are perplexed. Instead, a caffeine allergic person suffers from " ADHD " and becomes " mentally ill. " Here we are: the future, where 80-90% of the world's population uses caffeine, 25% of the population is diagnosed with a mental disorder, and at any one time 25% of hospital beds are taken by persons diagnosed with schizophrenia. Are you ready to recover? For starters on your journey back to your natural state, remove all caffeine from your diet, cut back on sugar, exercise, force yourself to drink water, listen to yourself, and say, " I remember feeling good, relaxed, without a care in the world. I slept well and knew what I wanted. " Think: " I know what my problem is. I am caffeine allergic. " Repeat it. Trust yourself. Request your medical records, including your lab tests. Go way back, if you can. Contact hospitals and clinics that you were seen at when you were a child. Although the records are yours, you might be charged up to a quarter a page because medicine is a money making industry. Ask in a brief and polite letter. When you're having a stress free day, review the records. Look at the lab tests. If any lab test is elevated or has been elevated in the past without a specific physical cause, you are physically ill. The physical illness led to mental illness. The next time you see your doctor or therapist, ask for an explanation of the chemical imbalance (s) you are being treated for. Request the information in writing. If you are in the mood to annoy and, let's face it, we all have our days, especially persons recovering from an illness they never knew they had, ask for a diagram of your faulty chemical pathways. Chances are, you won't get a straight answer. Persons treating you use caffeine on a daily basis. Cesare Lombroso claimed the less intelligent are treating persons of higher intelligence, who have unfortunately become psychotic and suffer intellectual decline. And now we know why. After removing caffeine from your diet, you'll recover, like the eighty-plus caffeine allergic persons around the world, so far, that I know of, after losing months, years, and decades to caffeine allergy and misdiagnoses are recovering. It will take time. When you recover, your trust in health care workers will never be the same. And that's okay. Because once again, you will trust and depend on you. Don't blame yourself or your parents. It never mattered if you ate one chocolate chip or drank ten cups of coffee a day. You developed an allergy, a chemical sensitivity, which usually occurs in childhood or young adulthood, after having ingested a substance on a regular basis. Your body couldn't get rid of caffeine, so it stayed in your cells and sensitized you. Brain function progressively deteriorated. I am caffeine allergic. Genetics gifted me with above average intelligence and a quiet state. I was very sick for a very long time, more than half of my lifetime. Pushing psychiatric drugs through the years, doctors toyed with my body and mind as they tried belittling my intellect. " No thanks, " I said, knowing I was physically ill. A good physician made an accurate diagnosis, but didn't know the chemical imbalances or how to treat me. I knew what to look for. I researched and recovered. I'm all better. I will never ingest caffeine again. But life is good. Health is good. Focus is a blessing. I can put the chemical imbalances of ongoing caffeine anaphylaxis and all of its " mental disorders " in writing and explain what happens in the body and why. And I did. I wrote a book on it. A. Hoffer M.D., Ph.D. wrote the foreword. The information is a century overdue. In closing, I thank doctors, researchers, psychologists, therapists, and pharmaceutical staff undereducated in chemistry for playing. Try again. A psychiatrist and several general practicioners congratulated me for discovering a new condition. But another psychiatrist suggested that I tone down my attitude. Having lost 27 years to medical ignorance, I won't do that. Besides, I learned a long time ago that when it's raining it is not snowing and that you cannot please everyone all the time. However, I apologize if I offend anyone. My objective isn't to offend but to educate. Do you remember childhood? Can you recall swapping your bag of chips for Randy Murray's hee-haw chocolate cakes, or Susie Simon's chocolate bar? Did your first date buy you chocolate ice cream? What about Girl Scout cookie sales? How did you spend your paper route money? Do you drink coffee at breakfast? What about in traffic? Did someone give you psychiatric pills? What did you buy at the grocery store?** Ruth Whalen, MLT (ASCP) ** I am not a doctor and this information is not a substitute for health care or medication.
