Guest guest
HI Cindy, I was going to reply about the magnesium, and leg cramps. I have a client who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, and when newly diagnosed, she did some research . At that time, she was on night shift as a nurse, and she was drinking lots of Diet Coke. Her symptoms were worse and her legs tingled and were painful. The research showed that when you have lots of Nutrasweet (Asparteme) , it produces something called Exotoxins, (spelling may be incorrect) which strips the magnesium from the myelin sheaths arounds the dendrites of the nerves. Interestingly enough, in her investigations, she found out that there was a study done in Scotland and children were found to have some symptoms of MS, these children were drinking excessive diet drinks ,and when these were stopped, the symptoms went away! She did stop drinking the Diet Coke, which was very hard for her, as she was " addicted " to it, and her symptoms eased but obviously did not go away. Just an interesting aside. Guest guest
Interesting! I didn't know there was an official study - I just know because I had pains from consuming aspartame, and I narrowed it down. I consume NO aspartame now, and no more pains. Not very scientific, but when someone complains of these pains, I always ask if they drink diet soft drinks - the answer is usually yes. Guest guest
I don't know if this has been mentioned here before, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Our local newspaper carries a column written by a Dr. Gott, people write in for advice etc. Since so many of us are soapmakers this particulat note caught my eye. There was a note about those painful leg cramps that occur during the night. Someone wrote in and said that if you place a small sliver of soap under the sheet in the leg area that it will help eliminate the night cramps. I get those leg cramps often and so does my dh, so I figured it was worth a try. I thought, oh yeah right! Believe it or not it did work for me. I don't know how or why but it did. Donna S. Guest guest
Oh I know how painful they can be. In addition to magnesium I drink Tonic Water which has quinine in it. I also had a prescription for Quinine but changed to the tonic water. Two MD recommended this treatment. Carolyn
Guest guest
Elizabeth, I do hope that you check the ratio of potassium and magnesium that your body is getting. Also, keep in mind the cal/mag ratio as well. Sasha ---- Elizabeth Otto 05/22/05 12:57:29 Leg Cramps I have a problem with leg cramps but it is eliminated by taking extra potassium. Low potassium causes leg cramps. If your son is perspiring quite a bit on his new job he needs to suppliment his potassium. Also keeps the heart going strong!! Guest guest
Leg cramps have troubled me off and on for years, but they only last long enough for me to jump to easy relief. I will take 1500 milligrams of potassium, then plenty of water. It would be good if your husband would increase his daily water intake. If he is not drinking at least 64 ounces of water daily, I would consider that a primary reason for cramping muscles. I have also gotten them in my wrists, fingers, and toes. The ;potassium always does the trick for me. Yes, we are all different, and he may need some other regimen, but it is worth a try, isn't it? Lotsa luck and luv from Andries
