A PersonalLetter and Demand from Thirty Five Survivors ofResidential School Death Camps, made to:Paul Martin, Prime Minister of CanadaRobert Nault, Minister of Indian AffairsPeter Short, Moderator, The United Church of CanadaJim Sinclair, General Secretary, The United Church of CanadaAdam Exner, Archbishop, Roman Catholic ChurchAndrew Hutchison, Archbishop, Anglican Church ofCanadaDear Gentlemen,We are elders and members of indigenous nations acrossCanada who survived the horrors and death in the"residential schools" funded, operated and authorizedby your government and churches.We saw our friends and relatives raped, tortured,sterilized, and murdered at the hands of clergy,church and government employees. We have

designatedthis day, April 15, 2005, as a national day ofremembrance and mourning for these murdered innocentsof our people.No apology or money from you will lessen our grief orundo the extermination that you and your institutionsdid to us in the name of your god. You will all haveto answer for your crimes before a higher court ofjustice, when you stand before the Creator of allpeople.We come before you today to make a simple and personaldemand to you: We ask and expect each and every one ofyou to identify the location of the burial sites whereour relatives who died in your residential schools areinterred - and to return their remains to theirtraditional territories for a proper burial.More than 50,000 aboriginal children died in yourresidential schools, and few of them ever returnedhome. Your government and churches know where they areburied. Simple humanity, as well as the law, requiresthat

you reveal their location and return them totheir homes from which they were kidnapped by youragents.We also ask and expect you to provide a full, publicdisclosure of the dates and the causes of theirdeaths, the names of their murderers, and the reasonwhy they were buried in secret for so long.We make this demand to you before the world, in theeyes of the Creator, and call upon our ancestors andyours to witness to the truth of our cause, and tomove your hearts to respond to us.As head officers of the government and churches ofCanada, we hold you, Paul Martin, Robert Nault, PeterShort, Jim Sinclair, Adam Exner, and Andrew Hutchison,personally responsible and liable for all of thecrimes and harm committed against our people by yourgovernment and by your churches, and are therebyresponsible for returning the remains of our relativesto us.If you are unable or unwilling to grant this demand,we
