Conventional mattresses have so many chemicals in them, because they

are made from synthetic materials. In addition to the petrochemical

materials they are made from, they also have polyurethane foams,

antimicrobial and fabric treatments, dyes, formaldehyde, and flame

retardants etc. There are so many chemicals in conventional

mattresses, that many fire fighters refer to them as " solid

gasoline " . (and the same goes for other stuffed foam furniture, like

chairs/couches etc.)

I did find places on both the east and west coasts of the U.S. that

sold organic mattresses when we were looking for them. But the cost

was prohibitive, and then shipping too, as we live in the

midwest...not on either coast.

I finally found a local futon furniture store that could special

order organic mattresses from a nearby maker. Much cheaper and no

shipping charges. Ours is 100% organic cotton, surrounded by 2

inches of organic non-treated wool wrap, then encased in organic

cotton fabric. You could try calling local futon stores, to see if

any of them offer them as special orders in your area. We live in an

area where " organics " aren't very popular in any catagory, so I was

very suprised we could find them locally here.

The wool wrap is what offers the fire protection, as its naturally

fire resistant, so no flame retardant chemicals need to be added. If

you go without the wool, and just want all organic cotton, you will

need a doctor's prescription in order to purchase the mattress

without the chemical flame retardants added, due to fire " safety "

laws.

Hope this helps...
