Anyone have any suggestions on how to help a dog with a spinal cord injury? My baby a cocker spaniel mix was injured yesterday by a neighbor who I believe but did not see hit her with a stick. She is paralyzed in her back half. She is most pitiful. The vet gave her steroids hoping to reduce swelling. We have to keep immobilized.

I had a dog that got a spinal cord injury when he was 5. he was unable to walk or even pee by himself for several months. since he was a lab mix and weighed nearly 80 lbs I couldnt carry him outside so we built a ramp on the steps and I carried his back half that didnt walk like the wheelbarrow race and he walked his own front half down the ramp. I had to take him to the yard like that and hold him up, spread out his legs and balance him and squeeze his bladder to pee for quite a while. I would put his legs down and hold his tail and let him learn to balance again. He did also get steroid shots, and also took prednisolone pills daily. he gradually came back and learned to walk and run again by himself and he lived to be 15 years old. he did get tumors in his later years that may or may not have had anything to do with the massive steroids he recieved, and he did get cancer in the end and had to be put down. but he had another 10 years of happy life that he wouldnt have had and lived as long as most big dogs live...so dont give up.

I also had a shelty get run over and she too got paralyzed in her back half and she crawled around for a couple months. we carried her in and out, and she too gradually was able to walk again.

I don't know pet physiology but perhaps bromelain and curcumin would

help to reduce the swelling and inflammation. Also helpful towards

healing would be comfrey root poultices wrapped around her injury.
