Group B Strep and semi-intro (long)

I am new to the list and very excited to be here--I've been learning

a lot. I have a question I thought I'd ask to the folks on this

group to see if anyone had any advice for me.

I am 26 weeks pregnant and planning a homebirth with a midwife. I

had a hospital birth with my first child and was tested and treated

during labor (with 3 rounds of IV antibiotics!!) for Group B Strep.

This was to prevent my infecting my baby with it while it was

passing through the birth canal.

Now, to my understanding, the chances of passing it on and even then

it seriously *harming* a newborn is very minimal, especially with

none of the risk factors such as premature labor, prolonged rupture

of membranes, etc... GBS is found in 30-50% of woman at any given

time, and can change from one day to the next. It causes the woman

no harm and is asymptomatic. It's just newborns with their immature

immune systems who are at risk.

Since the birth, when I was terribly mistreated and blatantly lied

to by my MD, I have been soured. Against allopathic medicine as a

whole--soured. I have kept to a very healthy vegan, medication-free

lifestyle. There has been no vaccination, abx, tylenol...nada. I

treat my entire family with herbs, homeopathics, and essential

oils. Very successfully, I might add. My three year old has never

had so much as a cough.

Back to GBS. My midwife doesn't even screen, she prefers to wait

for the risk factors. She recommends general immune system

enhancement through vit. c, echinacea, colloidal silver, probiotics,

etc... Also, I have a homeopath who was also a midwife and she sent

a strep remedy (a nosode, I think) and she said she never had a

woman test positive after taking it. You'd think with all the

souring against allopathics and success with natural remedies that

this would be enough for me. It almost is.

What I would like to hear from some of you is recommendations for

natural immunity boosters, natural antibiotics, etc... anything that

you think might increase my chances of a healthy birth. My midwife

is wonderful at what she does, but her expertise is not in natural

medicine. Thus, I'm kind of shopping around among those who are

more familiar with it.

Thank you so much for your time,

Shayla Roberts

Suzi,

Wow. That remedy looks....fun? Actually, it makes sense. I have

used cayenne and mashed garlic for the last two colds that I've had,

and I haven't had one in almost 2 years. It stinks but it knocks it

out. I will definitely try it. What's the dosage? (I'm sorry if

it gave that info, I might have overlooked it.)

I do notice that it uses horseradish, which is contraindicated for

medicinal use during pregnancy. Am I correct to assume that the

amount you take daily is small enough not to cause problems? Since

you're just using the fresh " food " version of horseradish?

Thanks,

Shayla

Also, I consume mostly organic and/or wholesome foods. Vegan, whole

grains, whole foods, non-hydrogenated fats, LOTS of fresh veggies

and fruits. I drink/cook with only distilled or well water that we

have tested for chemicals and impurities and then we filter. Also,

no chemicals are used in the home, from bath products to cleaning

supplies, so my exposure to harmful substances is hopefully

minimal.

Dosage - if you are ill you can take it 3-4 times a day... like 2 dropperfuls...

Yes, dosage is small and you are using all fresh ingredients... My daughter in law takes it only when she is feeling something coming on... She took it while pregnant (and baby was very healthy) and still does when needed . She figures it will help the baby too as he gets what she eats...so to speak... she is breastfeeding.

Maintenance - 2 dropperfuls a day... if you wish.

Hi Shayla,

Congratulations on your plans to homebirth! Yea!!

You sound right on track and you are obviously taking really good care

of yourself and your baby.

Glad to hear about your healthy 3 yr old. I am also a non vaxing, AP, no

antibiotics, extended (very) nursing, Mama to a beautiful thriving 4 yr

old.

To get rid of the Group B, you can try taking a tampon, soaking it in an

olive/tea tree blend and placing into your vagina twice a day for 30

min. each time. Tea tree oil should kill the Group B Strep. Only use

pure organic tea tree.

I learned about this treatment through another naturopathic Dr. and have

seen it's effectiveness in my own clients. I am not a Dr- I am a

holistic aromatherapist and I am not advising you do this- but sharing

what has worked for others I know safely during pregnancy. You can also

use yogurt or pure aloe instead of the olive oil if you prefer.

Otherwise...enjoy your pregnancy...I look forward to hearing from you on

the list.

Take care!

Love,

Elizabeth
