Guest guest
I'm not Greg, but I can tell you about the diet. Easiest way I can explain it is in bits and pieces and then fulling in the blanks. The diet (way of eating/way of life) has 4 phases: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance. Which means that the Atkins WOE is not a fad or " crash " diet, it is for the rest of your life. In Induction one drops to 20 carbs a day; those carbs are mostly veggies, cheese and creams. One can eat as much meat as they want, within reason of course. Atkins advises 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup of additional veggies. Most of the veggies that you eat have very little sugar in them. The Inducstion isn't just about low carb, high protein, but also NO sugar and NO fruits. After Induction (which is 2 weeks) you move onto Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL). In OWL you gradually add in more carbs each week. The idea behind this is that you learn how many (max)carbs you can eat while still losing weight. The next phase is Pre-Maintenance: Make the transition from weight loss to weight maintenance by increasing the daily carbohydrate intake in 10-gram increments each week so l ong as very gradual weight loss is maintained. Phase 4 is Maintenance: Select from a wide variety of foods while controlling carbohydrate intake to ensure weight maintenance and a sense of well-being. This lifestyle is the foundation for a lifetime of better health. In the latter phases you can add in nuts, berries and some fruit, and (if you can handle it) grains. Here's the secret of the diet; because you've dropped your carb level to 20 carbs your body goes into ketosis. What this means is that you're burning your fat stores and using them as a source of fuel they were meant to be. Quoting the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book: The phenomenon of ketone formation as the major alternative fuel system is so scientifically well-studied that it is simply not disputed in academic circles. It is as agreed upon as any scientific fact can be. In fact, Dr. George Cahill, the Harvard professor considered to be the preeminent teacher of metabolic-pathway research, after noting that brain tissue utilises ketones more readily than glucose, announced that ketone bodies were a " preferred fuel " for the brain. BTW ketosis is not ketoacidosis, which is the consequence of insulin deficient subjects having their blood sugar levels out of control. The two conditions are virtually polar opposites and can always be distinguished from one another by the simple fact that the diabetic has been consuming carbohydrates and has a high blood sugar, in sharp contrast to the fortunate person in ketosis. If this doesn't answer your questions you can always check out this site: http://atkins.com/ HTH, Jen >Hey Greg, > >In all fairness, I have heard the Atkins diet HAS been updated revised etc. It used to be a prescription for cancer imo. Guest guest
Doc, To answer the question on exercise, yes he does, although he doesn't get specific in anything I've read. But he definitely does recommend it as well as specific vitamins, which, of course, is sold under the Atkins Brand name. Guest guest
Hmmmmmmmmmm, tis as I thought. Not enough attention is paid to exercise and other factors in any of these diet programs that supposedly specialize in weight loss. This is why one has to look at attaining good health and losing weight from an holistic viewpoint. Without going into the Spritual and the Mental (and these do need to be confronted), the Physical by itself needs to address at the very least; diet, exercise, vitamins, cleansing (detoxification), sunlight, clean air, pure water, minerals, massage (body work), enzymes, amino acids (proteins), and lifestyle changes IF ONE IS GOING TO LOSE WEIGHT PERMANENTLY AND DO SO IN A HEALTHY MANNER. A Diet book that only tells you what to EAT, or how to EAT will never be anything more than one or two pieces of the weight loss puzzle. Never! The subjects of losing weight and good health (and these are very difficult to separate one from the other), must be approached from a wholistic viewpoint. In other words, one must take a look at the "whole" human entity and all of its parts. Weight loss is not just a diet problem as so many books have led us to believe. OBEISITY IS A LIFESTYLE PROBLEM!!! AND THIS INCLUDES THE SPIRITUAL AND THE MENTAL. IT IS NOT ALL PHYSICAL. Guest guest
Sounds as if Atkins has come a long way ;o) Since I'm not completely familiar with your case Greg, I'm not sure what else to suggest to you personally. Another exercise that you might be able to do is swimming. Also, with you on a trampoline, and another person bouncing it, you would find this beneficial exercise wise.
