Atkin's Diet

I think someone else gave a very good description of the diet and I would just pop in and say that hubby and I have been eating this way for 4 years. Definitely the BEST thing that has happened to both of us. Both reduced cholesterol, blood pressure, lost much needed weight (hubby 42 lbs and me 25 lbs) and gained much energy and stamina. Getting rid of sugar has been the biggest plus. I was severely hypoglycemic for years and now I have absolutely NO problem with it. No "slumps" during the afternoon.

We are in the maintenance level and have salads for lunch and dinner along with a portion of meat (lean) and veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, green beans, squash, etc). Each evening we have fresh or frozen strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries with a splash of cream. Snacks include plenty of almonds, pecans or walnuts. No refined flour or sugar. A myth is that you do not eat enough fruit and vegetables. I eat far more than I used to in my old eating habits but avoid high sugar vegetables and fruits, however.

I work at a medical school as an administrator in a research department. When I first started this way of eating I was told to "be careful" but after a year 3 investigators began their own investigation of the diet. Since they teach cell and tissue biology, human anatomy and neurobiology, they are very much aware of the human body and how it functions . . . down to the cells. ALL came to the same conclusion and began this way of eating and have enjoyed the same results of lower BP, weight loss and increase in energy. I recently learned that the Dean of the school of medicine has changed to this eating style.

I have added the PP to my daily regime and plan to add TT when the budget allows.

Hey Greg,In all fairness, I have heard the Atkins diet HAS been updated revised etc. It used to be a prescription for cancer imo. I have been very well aware of the diet in it's original form...what 25-30 yrs old now? Longer? It WAS all about meat. Since I have spent the majority of my 42 yrs vegetarian and my mom had breast cancer and became macrobiotic when I was about 13- very wary of meat....I have always been scared of that diet. Would you mind sharing what the diet entails now? What does a typical day look like according to the plan- if that's a fair question?I don't want you to feel like you need to defend your choice- a diet that has done what you asked of it, but I am curious to see what it does entail. Just so you know... Atkins is very safe and works very good...Studys have showed this to be true... if you look at the Atkinsway of life (it's not a diet) you will see that it just has you eattingreal food and to stay away from man made foods.. and we end upeatting more veg's then most people ever would... nothing at allwrong with it if you can stay with organic meats. I eat organic meats, eggs , cheese and stuff when i can.... we do not have much ofit sold here and when i run out of stuff i get from family and friendswe have to go non organic as we are not rich and can pay the too highprices of organic so it eat what we can spend on food or not eat at all.organic is great if you have the money for it.... i do the best i can withtrying to eat organic, but not easy in smaller citys and towns.... beingreal so called "doctors" hate Atkins and say it's not safe at all, tells meit must be good just because medco's hate it.lol... all 3 of my doctorsare on a type of Atkins and i checked with them before going on itagain.... i was on it years ago in the 80's. Being i am in a wheelchair andthe one med. i can't quit can make me to put on weight i have to sosomething to stop the gain and lose weight.. i am at a point now i ameating more vegs than anyone i know here in town and they are safe andorganic as me and a friend grow it all right now and use nothing nonorganic on them.... i do eat all organic eggs and cheese.. they are nottoo bad on price and i can find them here in town... we only have afew meals with non organic meat's , but this due to cost... I do not eata lot of meats at the point of atkins....can get the fats i need fromother foods..... just my points of view here and it all does work verywell for me... i am taking TT and PP all the time now.. .. long as i stayaway from open flames when drinking TT lol... it is all working good.It burned my chest cold out of me fast.... this summer cold was myonly time being sick in 3 and a half years... and the only think wrongwith me is my muscular dystrophy and not a lot can be done about that.I am doing all i can to be as healthy as i can be... my MDA doctor isvery much all for organic natural healing in all ways that it can be doneand he says he lifes as organic as he can....sorry for the long post here.... thanks to any who read it all and i hopei did not miss word much here...lol.. Doc)I was talking to my mom the other day and she mentioned my brother is on the Atkins diet.I was pretty alarmed and she mentioned that it had be changed quite a bit and was no longer "as bad"- I assume there musty be more than meat!I disagree with a lot of things that may seem to "work" usually in one area while causing more trouble in other areas. I think that if Doc did not have some concern or objection to a diet like Artkins I would be very concerned about his credibility as a practicing holisitic Dr.After all this list is devoted to health not isolated, temporary *fixes*.That said. good for you! You have achieved something that's making you feel good about yourself and your body! That IS wonderful. I know it's a lot of fun and a good feeling. There are real reasons to question a diet like Atkins imo. And it's actually quite serious in my opinion. It's not personal and it's not about "Atkins". There are millions of products and diets out there that will cause you to loose weight, The question I have is at what expense?I don't want to take away any of your glory. My hope would be that following this diet you transition into a healthier one and PLEASE eat nothing but organic meat if you decide to eat it.There are A LOT of definitions for "healthy" out there these days. Buyer beware.I think a NON PERSONAL conversation about diets like this one and others would make for an excellent topic here.I don't want to burst your bubble at all- I'm happy for your "success" but see far reaching issues with Atkins diet.Take care~ElizabethOn Thursday, August 21, 2003, at 08:40 AM, e g wrote:You may disagree with it...but it works! I've been on the diet since May and I've lost 34 pounds so far (2 sizes down). This diet has changed my life, for the better. I've been very overweight since I was a teen, and this is the first diet in over 10 years that has worked. Grats Greg on the diet!Jen
