Jaggery is an unrefined sugar made from the juice of crushed sugar cane stalks. It can be found in East Indian markets, usually in one of two forms; a soft golden sugar with a spreadable texture and a solid cake-like form. It has a distinctive flavor, but brown sugar can be used as a substitute in most applications.

There are many claims as to it's medicinal properties... but I don't know anyone who has used it to know if it is true or not.

I used jaggery while we were in India

I wasn't sure whether it was from sugar cane

until I researched it.

I've been off sugar(mostly) now for awhile using Stevia

instead. and was wondering if anyone was familiar with jaggery.

Is it beneficial in any way or does it belong to the

AVOID ALL SUGAR catagory.

my husband won't do stevia..too much of the aspartame/saccrin

after taste...so I thought I'd use the jaggery to win/ween him over

to the other side. recently I purchased some from the Indian grocer

except it is a whole lot cheaper than " sugar in the raw "

BUT, if it is just SUGAR of another color....then why bother.

thanks

Sucrose in any form is debilitating.

It burns without building.

This may be old data, but many herbs coming from India, Egypt, China, etc. even when grown organically, may be subject to fumigation and irradiation according to American Agri-Laws.

It's best to stick with the local.
