I have worked at a private school for over 5 years now and by far the best students we get are home schooled. The best. Socially they adapt much faster then someone from a public school. Not only can they adapt but they have not been exposed to several things which can ruin a child's perspective on life and how it really works. Example: Have any of you parents experienced your kids wanting specific name brand items. What about playing the gameboy/computer/Xbox etc throughout the day. What about pokemon? Does your kid know all the characters names? Remember this is for parents with kids attending public schools. What about language and the new ideas they bring home. These are but a few of the things I run into with kids coming to my boarding school that have been through the public "school" system and it makes me sick. When they get older the dealers in the school start putting peer pressure to take drugs etc. One more example: 16 year old girl, home schooled, runs her own dog walking business, going to college for a degree in designing and tile work. She visits the school for summer as a baby sitter and pays her own way through a great 3 months of fun. Everyone loves her. I have never seen such initiative from a public school child. Never. They often are so confused about what they want, who or what a FRIEND IS and so on. There are so many problems that you don't notice until your with these kids for 24 hours a day for over 2-3 months or several years. Boy I'm amazed that people actually send their kids to people who won't stand to be corrected because they KNOW more than the kids. Well I've been corrected many a time from kids throughout my teaching career and they can and do KNOW things that opened my eyes to what I was working with. In closing... Look at your kid, consult him/her on what he/she thinks of public school and really confront what your child is going through. Wow didn't know I had that to say. I love kids, I work with them all the time, 12-14 hours a day 6 days a week and they trust your judgement so lets not let them down. When my sixteen year old was around fourteen, she was having an extremely hard time with peer pressure and what we allowed her to do or not to do... We didn't allow drugs or drinking. Her curfew was 11pm on the weekends/holidays and dark on school nights. I thought this was pretty lenient...at fourteen, I was in the house by dark EVERY night. My husband still thought 11pm was too late...anyway... She got into alot of trouble that resulted in Probation and all kinds of therapy. After about three months of this "therapy" yall will never guess in a million years what the therapist said her "problem" was... This woman told me that we were being too hard on her for this day and time, seriously as a heart attack. She went on to say that with so many kids today being allowed to come and go and do as they pleased, it was really unfair to be so strict on Abby. And, she even went so far as to say that we were the cause of Abby's imbalance. I was livid. The fact that Abby was in a gang, doing all kinds of drugs and getting so drunk at the bowling alley she was passing out in the parking lot, it seems, didn't have as much affect on her "imbalances" as the horrible things we were doing to her. Then, when the assistant principal of the school started covering for her and keeping her out of trouble and keeping things from me...I'd had enough. That and the fact that she and I were about to kill each other on a daily basis is the reason I allowed her to go to Florida and live with my mom. I fought her and these idiots for about two years, and that was my breaking point. She's almost seventeen now, and I have come to the conclusion that my ignorance in many things was the cause of my failure with Abby...I should have researched this mess and found this list a long, long time ago. But, Wayne told me yesterday when we sat down to talk about this home schooling business that he was all for it as long as I was serious about it. If alot of you remember I was against this to start with...But, there's so many seriously important reasons to do this...as long as I remember them, how can I fail...? (as she wonders if she's trying to convince the others or herself...) I've always said: My only regret(1) in life is not doing things I do now sooner (does that make sense?). If I keep that in mind I constantly remind myself not to be lax about things I know I need to do to get to where I want to be today and in the future, which includes how I tread every moment and situation. I guess this is just a twisted glossed over version of: " Never regret yesterday. Life is in you today, and you make your tomorrow. " (L. Ron Hubbard). Bear in mind we all know this is a difficult path to follow and we all get in touch with the so called inner regret throughout our lives as much as we know it's not a productive place to be. If we didn't that would make us " perfect " . But Ron Hubbards words above are important because they keep regret in check and remind us what a waste of time it is to ponder upon them.
