Guest guest Posted July 16, 2003 Report Share Posted July 16, 2003 We had an awesome homeschooling project for four years here in Sequim at the Sequim community school. However the person who was in charge of it was not rehired this next year even though she offered to take a huge pay cut and rearranged her hours etc. The parents were up in arms and upset that the declining enrollment was used as an excuse when so many of the parents pulling their children from the program were saying it was the new principal that caused them to do so. I was not involved, but as an Americorps member some of the children were ones that I would work with in another program. The principal said he was just complying with state regs. the parents groups went to the board and complained that the rules were being applied arbitrarily. So now the program is greatly reduced and may not be there at all this nect year. When I started there were dozens of parents, who all donated time and the classes ranged from sign language, to archery, pottery and computer program design to drama (they put on " I remember Mama " and " The Hobbit " ) to a Video film production class that lasted all year and went through the directing, props, staging, makeup, post production, editing and distribtion. Any way, the parents who did protest? They all complained their kids were targeted. It made it rough on all 18 of the programs held inthe school in one way or another. I have also taught in a Seventh Day adventist school in a small town in AZ. It was just parents and kids, but we each brought in a set of skills and worked with the kids. I liked this much better then being home all alone with one child... well just my two cents worth of thoughts and experiences. Have a great night... It will be a good exercise for them also and will help them to understand it better in the process! I don't know what the law in your country is - here in the UK the how and the what of homeschooling is left up to the parents!! We do not have to follow the curriculum if we don't want to!! The law only states that we have to educate our children according to their age and ability! That's it. They only thing the state can do is to check that we do educate - they can't do anything else! There are quite a few homeschoolers in my area, and we team up at least once a week for outings for the kids, such as the beach, museum, park, historical sites, etc, depending on the age of the kids going. Most of them simply use life to teach the children! Anyhow, I went searching last night and found a website on the laws of homeschooling in Indiana. It states the same thing you said. And, parents don't have to have a college education. I have only a year of computerized accounting. You have to teach English and you have to keep attendance records. And, school is supposed to be the same hours and days as the local schools. That's all I could find. Some websites say that you are supposed to teach the same subjects, but this one has an amendment (or something on that line) that the schools can't tell you what to teach. And, get this, there are NO testings done by the superintendent. I don't know why Aunt Brenda would have told me this...This family will tell you anything if they don't think you should do something. Anyhow, I asked Wayne straight up what he thought about homeschooling and he had the same argument as I did about the socialization. I showed him Doc's post and he didn't have anything to say... It's a hard subject to argue...but, I'll tell ya, after Taylor acting like she did the other night, I dread them going back now... I didn't like school, but I've always been taught that school is like work...it's just something you have to do. And, I'm usually the one accusing Wayne of being stuck in the past... It isn't that hard to learn a subject that you are lower in knowledge about either. There are also a lot of texts and workbooks out there you can use as well as classes on video if you so desire. What is available for use in homeschooling is endless, and it doesn't have to cost anything if you access your local library and make your own work. Just curious.. 1. Get a good support system. Most states have an organized homeschool group. 2. There are hundreds, if not thousands of homeschooling retailers. You can tailor curriculum to fit your needs so if there is something you're not good at your child will still excell. For example, there are a few really good video algebra programs out there. 3. There are distance learning programs and umbrella schools that can offer online or over the phone teacher support. Homeschooling is easier than it ever has been. The only drawback is that there is so much to choose from that it can get a little confusing. I love homeschooling because with the program we've chosen, my children learn all their history and science with living books, we get to spend quality time together and they are not going to school 7 hours a day just to come home and do 4 hours of homework too. They still get to be children. If you are serious about learning more, here is a website that has great articles as well as a wonderful message board to ask questions. Gosh Angel, if you kids want this, I would really recommend you homeschool! Life can be so much more fun :-) I don't always have it easy as a single mum, having to make income and homeschool Jamie. But it sure beats the alternatives! So I cope with it; occasionally find a big shoulder to lean on/cry on, and get on with it again! But one look at my beautiful son makes me know it's well worth it!!
