Guest guest
I bought a whole baby salmon yesterday and decided this time to keep the head as it's starting to seem a little sacriligous to throw it out. Anyone have any good recipes which use fish heads? All I've ever known untiil recently was clean filets in the fridge at the grocery store so I am not sure how to handle the heads. Thanks, ILANA xoxo
Guest guest
FISH EMULSION! A while back I decided to try to make my own fish emulsion to fertilize plants. Stuck some fish guts in a bucket of water and set it " way out yonder " to ferment for a couple weeks. Strain and bottle. I suppose salmon heads would fit into this scheme. Guest guest
Dear Ilana, Fish heads are one of the best things you can throw in your compost heap. T'will give you absolutely the best soil. I threw a couple into my compost heap when I lived in Florida along with some papaya seeds, and the papaya tree that grew outa that heap was awesome. Some of the papayas produced on that plant were bigger than footballs. They were huge. I've never seen bigger papayas. Anywho, fish heads and scraps are great for the compost pile. Guest guest
Great idea! This way you can use your "brew" for foliage feeding as well. Guest guest
They won't stink in an open air compost pile, especially if you put a thin layer of leaves or other compost material on top. You can always bury them in the heap as well. They can't go in the compost heap, right? We put a bit of the fish bits in the garbage and after only a day they STUNK TO HIGH HEAVEN.ILANA xoxolouherbs wrote: FISH EMULSION! Guest guest
Sure, you can bury them to keep the cats out. An open air compost heap can be excellent. Water 'em a couple of times a week and you should have a good one. My Valorie throws all our table scraps into a blender with water, blends 'em up and pours that either onto the heap or directly on to plants she's growing. Works great. But my compost heap is just an open one surrounded by some stones so it doesn't just look like a garbage pile (it's out in back of the apartment buildings where we live and not my land). Can I just bury them under? THere are cats wandering around here and I don't want them to get into the pile.ILANA xoxoDr. Ian Shillington wrote: Dear Ilana, Fish heads are one of the best things you can throw in your compost heap.
