Guest guest
Has anyone got experience > with a very SIMPLE method of composting, preferably one that doesn't > require me to spend any money? > > Thanks, > ILANA xoxo Some people dig a hole and put their compost down in it and then turn it with a shovel. I don't bother digging a hole. I layer my compost pile above ground. And I use rabbit poop to activate it. I use a layer of greens, grass clippings, hay, whatever, a layer of rabbit poop and a layer of veggie scraps and turn it every few days. You have to keep the pile moist. I like to encourage worms as well, so I try to keep the pile slightly acidic for them and the acid loving plants I like to grow. Plus the soil here is too alkaline so acidic compost is badly needed. I raise rabbits so have poop onhand. It doesn't burn plants to apply it straight and worms love it. It breaks down fast too. They usually sell 60 lb bags for $2.00 at rabbit raising cavies. Did that help? bt

No cat poop in the compost, or dog poop either. Dang and you thought the tonic was bad E Gads! No meat eating animals poop. You can buy cow poop or get some horse poop if you know anyone who has them. A bag from the store is only a couple of bucks. I think 2.00 or close to it. As far as greens, if your neighbors don't use a lot of garbage on their lawns, you could bum their grass clippings, they would be more than happy to ablige you. I have done that too. I would FED EX you some rabbit droppings, but it wouldn't be cost effective. 4 Her's will have spare poop whether it be rabbit, horse or cow and will be happy to " share " or off load some of it. Just make sure you use lots of greens as that's what makes the (nitrogen) heat to kill the seeds of weeds and the animal feed that they have pooped. (Usually alfalfa amoung other things) You can do a real cheap compost pile. You have brought many smiles, thanks.... bt
