Guest guest
craving grapefruits and lemons could mean you needed to cleanse your liver. I am doing a liver cleanse now and part of the program is to drink fresh squeezed lemon and grapefruit juices. Or maybe you needed the vit c- or maybe you were craving the sour... i crave sour when I have nausea moments during motion sickness moments. We hear about stuff like this happening every day, and they really wonder why and are actually insulted when we show anything other than blind trust! Well, I've been reading about the cleansing and fertility posts... You used to hear (at least we did in the South) that pregnant woman had the strangest cravings...two being chalk or clay. And all the health departments where I was at advised strongly against eating any...and I am very serious here. I guess there was a problem with some ladies eating clay planting pots. I guess they broke them up and would suck on them until there was nothing left to them. I'm not real sure about this because I was like seventeen and remember thinking how crazy those women must have been. But, now...with clay being one of the main ingredients in the intestinal cleanse...I began to wonder if those women were smarter than all the other people at the health department... I craved lemons and grapefruits with both my girls. It was so bad I would eat a whole bag a day. Right by theirselves, no salt, no sugar, nothing. Folks around me thought I was messed up and the baby was going to come out all dried up. So here's my thoughts...if pregnant woman crave clay or chalk, maybe their bodies were telling them they needed a cleansing. But, what would such a strong craving for lemons and grapefruits mean? And while I'm at it, does anyone have any thoughts on this folic acid thing for pregnant woman. I read last night that folic acid just before and right after pregnancy is thought (by the medicos) to prevent birth defects of all kinds. This was on the web, and it wasn't a natural anything site, so I'm just wondering if there's anything to it. One more...what's your opinion of hospital birth vs. home birth? I really am feeling more and more like I am pregnant and even though I'll be 35 in July, I just have this fear of going to the hospital to have another baby. My first three was born at the same hospital and I had no special tragedies happen with any of them, but they just do so many (I think) unnecessary things to the baby and the mom (what's this painful shot they slapped in my leg to help make my uterus contract? It was AFTER the baby was born and there was no problem during labor and delivery...) And, I am really set on the idea that the mom is immune to any "germs" around her house as well as the baby, but not hospital junk. I have never had one problem with any of the other deliveries. As a matter of fact, with my second child, I try to hope this nurse was just trying to ease my mind, but Taylor had crowned and the doctor was in the middle of twins. She told me not to push, and anyone that's had a baby knows that those were fighting words, at the very least...useless words. You can imagine the look I gave her. And then she said, "Oh, don't worry honey, I can see your body was just MADE for having babies!" Never the less, my point is that I've never had any problems with labor or delivery...even with my first almost 17 years ago (oh my!) about five hours from start to finish and three pushes and there she was! I was 29 with my last baby, I was stubborn in that I didn't want an IV so I waited until my water broke to go to the hospital. I was crowned when the nurse checked me in and I had no pain meds what so ever. (I had epidurals with the first two and they done such bad stuff to my body and scared me so bad, I willing took the last L & D with nothing to help.) Does your body change that much in six years? If you can answer this question keep in mind that for all those years I was a waitress in a high volume restaurant. Guest guest
As for the clay, there are a LOT of minerals in the clay that the body needs. Maybe in this women there's a deficiency and eating the clay takes care of this. AS for your body feeling a need to do a cleansing during pg, I think that's highly unlikely. The body does what it can to protect the growing fetus and exposing it to toxins being released in a cleansing just doesn't work in the best interests of the child. I think that once again it was more like a deficiency of some sort, maybe Vitamin C, or maybe whatever else citrus fruits have to offer! I can't give you much of an answer on your other points except for the folic acid bit. THe body stores folic acid for a while (can't remember if it's months or years, I get mixed up with it and B12) but if you don't get it in your food then your stores are depleted pretty quickly. Folic acid is essential for proper cell formation which is why it's so important to make sure that you have enough to satisfy the needs of both yourself and your fetus. THe reason why it's so important to make sure your stores are full BEFORE pg is that the spinal column forms within the first three weeks of pg, even before most women know they are pregnant. As for after, well, it's good to always make sure you have enough of your vitamins, and folic acid is one of the hardest ones for us to obtain with our current diets. Guest guest
Thsi condition doesn't meant there is something wrong other than the Mother needs minerals. That is what the French Clay and other clays are sold for (sometimes) in the health food store. Patty There is a condition in pregnancy where a woman can crave dirt, mud, and sometimes other wierd items. It is a sign, according to pregnancy books, that there is something wrong and the dr usually does some sort of tests. It is a rare thing and very odd! I dont know the name of this condition but it does exist. I guess maybe these women were eating clay pots for this reason. I have heard the urge can be very strong. It is a sign of something going on in the body during pregnancy, again I dont know the right name for this
