What you bought was an herbal tincture..... tinctures are made using ethanol or vodka to extract the active principles of the herbs into a solution. The alcohol is also a preservative. The herb mix looks good to me for anxiety.

Question from a new member

Hi,

I'm new to the group and have been lurking for the past week or so. I've read the rules sent to me when I joined and I think this is an appropriate question. I went to an "herb store" and was recommended to purchase something for anxiety because I had been feeling as though I was about to jump out of my skin. I purchased a bottle of liquid herbs that contains the following:

distilled water

38% ethanol

lady's slipper

blue vervain

scullcap

hops

valerian root

I researched the contents on the internet and was very surprised to read that vodka is made from ethanol and water. Is this true? The drops are making me feel much better, but is it the herbs that are making me feel better or the ethanol/vodka? Is there a difference in the ethanol put in herbal remedies and the ethanol used to make vodka? And does this particular combination of herbs sound logical for anxiety? From what I could find on the internet it sounds appropriate to me, but I'm new at this and need some advice from those of you with more experience.

I have many more questions to ask you all but I'll stop at one for right now.

Thanks so much,

Terry
