Herbal Eyebright...?

On one of my eyesight improvement forums, an herbal eye

formula was requested and I posted the herbal eyebright

formula from Doc's files here on herbal remedies.

One of the members questioned the use of DMSO and alcohol

together, saying that it would go directly into the bloodstream and

that this was not desirable.

How does one reply to a statement like that? I said that as the

eye is not well-vascularized, and has only the tears, aqueous

and vitreous humors that bathe the various structures, a

penetrating solution would be beneficial, not dangerous.

Was I correct in saying this? I do know that the cornea and lens

have no blood vessels in them whatsoever. Is there any danger

at all in using the eyebright formula? Would it travel to other parts

of the body through the circulatory system, or would it remain in

the eye and its associated muscular structure?

Francine,

I've used it on my goats cataracts and it cleared them up and did not hurt my goat at all... I'm thinking of trying it for my own eyes... You dilute the formula with the dmso and distilled water to wash out the eye. Doc will be able to tell you more on this though

Dear Fran,

What you answered was OK, however there is more to it than that.

#1. There is more alcohol in a ripe banana than there is in one dropperful of a tincture, and you are only using 3 to 10 drops of the EyeBright Formula in an eye cup and furthermore are diluting it with distilled water.

(NB: There are 36 drops to a dropperful)

#2. Alcohol when mixed with any herb(s) acts as a catalyst for the biochemical properties of those herbs and allows them to be absorbed and utilized quickly. Compared to a shot of whiskey, the negative effects of alcohol in a tincture are negligible and conversely are saluatory rather than debilitating.

#3. Using the DMSO will bring the biochemical properties of the herbs into the area where they need to be along with the very small quantity of alcohol which as a catalyst will cause them to work better, faster, and more efficiently.

Hope this helps.

Love,

Doc

Remind them that the alcohol used is vodka, not rubbing alcohol (some people actually think you use rubbing alcohol to make tinctures). Also, there is such a small amount it couldn't possibly do any harm. The vodka is needed to extract and hold the medicinal qualities of the plant materials.

I used eyebright tea as eyedrops on my babies for osme bacterial pink eye. It worked like a charm. I put it in my own eyes first & It's no different than regular eyedrops. (but putting eyedrops into a 2 & 1 year old is not easy). I would rather take on the goat.
