Guest guest
I found this on a website and i remembered someone on the list saying that they are raising their dogs on garlic, so i thought this might be of interest. Giving almost anything for very long peroids is likely to be harmful depending on the substance, but i'm not a professional so i am curious as to what everyone else thinks about this: Complementary, Alternative, and Holistic Veterinary Medicine (www.AltVetMed.com) : """Another example of seemingly harmless herbal medication is the constant use of garlic. Garlic has been well characterized as a powerful antimicrobial, cardiac treatment, and cholesterol lowering agent. In addition, we tend to use it to repel and kill parasites in veterinary medicine. The problem is that garlic belongs to a family of plants that may cause anemia in animals if given for long periods of time. These chronic toxicity levels have not been well established, but we would do well to refrain from constant use of garlic, unless medically indicated.""" So, there it is.... too much of anything is not a good thing. Herbs, as a well as medications, also seem to loose their effect after being taken for long periods of time and might even change your body's chemistry, since adapting to the changes in your body. Like, for example, if you take Melatonin in pill form, which is also a natural chemical that is secreted by the Pineal Gland, your body might eventually stop making the same amounts as it used to because it no longer needs to due to the high concentration from the pills. This is why I never take anything for longer than 2 weeks (unless it's a crisis, which hasnt' happened yet). Do you think this theory holds true in all cases? *irene
Guest guest
Irene, For 6 years now, I have given my goats garlic once a month for worming and when they get sick they also get garlic.... It has not hurt my goats... I don't feed it to them everyday though... but in thinking about this...... my Aunt, who is italian...and a retired co-worker i know, have eaten garlic almost every day of their lives... and both are healthy... Both by the way are in their 70's.. I do believe some herbs should only be taken when needed. Garlic is, what I consider a food.... where as something like echinacea, I consider an herb or medicine... (this is my opinion) I think that everyone needs to research any herb that they are going to take, and the reason they are taking it... And many animals have different systems that we humans.... cats, for one can not take alot of herbs that dogs or people can... or goats. Hope this helps some.
