Guest guest
I use grains medicinally in a limited way. My Chinese herbalist often tells me to eat congee, which is a rice soup. I believe it is warming and good for the digestion. I was told to make it rice: water about a 1: 5 ratio, cooked with scallions or leeks and ginger. I frankly don't care for congee at all but he told me to just consider it medicine, which made sense to me since most of the herbal preparations he puts together for me taste much worse. Recently I did make a pot of congee and it did have a very beneficial effect on my digestion and immune system. I've also been told by him and my previous (now deceased) TCM practitioner to cook barley with my rice to remove " dampness " from my system. This is the kind of barley sold in Chinatown and in health food stores known as " Job's tears. " Fran
