stocking up for the what ifs

Amanda, I too live in the boonies and at times things happen that make it almost impossible to get to town. Right now it is the weird weather and I have a 300ft (Mud Pit) driveway that is making it almost impossible to get out. Fortunately I have chickens and goats so fresh eggs and milk are no problem. But what I do is when stocking up on groceries and non-perishable Items is that each time I buy something that we normally eat - I always buy a little extra. In that way we always have extra and I am not sacrificing quality for quantity. I do some of my own canning in the fall and that way we have the good stuff from our garden almost year round. I don't set aside an amount to have extra I just maintain very full cupboards and always rotate your foods. I do buy bottled water and distilled water by the case when it is on sale and am forever tripping over an extra case of something that will not fit in the closet. I am not afraid of war and what it could do to my area. I have more fear of ice storms, spring thaw, mud, and a very mechanically challenged car. Docs suggestion of stocking up on the Total Nutrition as well as the ingredients for the total tonic and all his other suggestions is wonderful. In this way there should be very few emergencies in which someone could not handle. I also recommend stocking up on medical supplies as well. Bandages, splints, and general first aid supplies. It never fails that the day the car won't start that is when I do something stupid and get hurt. And yes stocking up on duct tape never hurt anyone either. The last big wind storm here put a tree limb through a window and it was 2 weeks before I could get it fixed. I do like my duct tape. Also anyone with a fireplace needs to always keep a large supply of firewood on hand. A battery operated radio with extra batteries. I have a small generator that sits in the shed. I does not take up very much room and it is only big or powerful enough to run the freezer in case of a blackout - In 5 years I have never needed it for this purpose but I do use it to power my power tools when out working on the barn or in some remote area. These are just some things to think about.
