Guest guest
Just a quick note. In WWI & II, Victory Gardens played a very important part in the well being of the American people. With the current horrendous quality of the American Food chain, I feel it paramount this movement be started again. During those times, everyone had their own garden and it was a very successful project. What is little known about those times is that because of Victory Gardens, the overall health of the American people went waaaaaaaaay up and the hospitals emptied out. Valorie is currently doing some major research in this area trying to find out the successful actions of that 80 year old program. If any of you have any data whatsoever having to do with this (books, pamplets, sources, referrences, etc.), I'd appreciate it if these were posted to the list. A full discussion amongst members would be very welcome. With the threat of war looming on our horizon, I think we'd all be fools not to have some alternative food sources available to us. Any and all help in this project would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Here are a few that I've found that aren't overtly commercial. This is something that has been on my mind for some time. All I have to do is figure out how to implement it and what to get etc. I haven't grown vegetables since I was about 10 years old. (long time... Guest guest
ValorieShillington (AT) GilaNet (DOT) com Doc, As you know Mary Ostrowski has been researching this for a week of so to help me out. Here are the two sites she has found. http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/pdf/book4.pdf http://www.earthlypursuits.com/WarGarV/WarGard13.htm I spent several hours on the early pursuits site last evening and found it quite fascinating. The things that I found the most uplifting was the fact that a huge number of Americans jumped aboard this project and it was started by a non-government group and from what I gathered last night (lots more research to do before I feel really informed) this non- government group was able to generate an enormous support from the news papers and magazines as well as the government and people to pull off a tremendous impact. The food supply was greatly supplemented but equally as important was the savings on labor and fuel and wear and tear on railroad tracks etc. Also the space freed up on the railroad to carry and support war efforts. One slogan on a poster was Sow the Seeds of Victory and the poster was painted by a well know artist. The exciting thing to me was to see what a group of Americans could do when they had a united, important purpose. Read the article on the Story of the Gardens on the early pursuits site to see the numbers of people involved as well as the amounts of money involved. These figures are staggering and impressive to say the least. I am not in any way saying I believe in war. I'm looking strickly at Victory Gardens from the viewpoint of what a group of people can accomplish when they are united in a cause. I found it funny that they say F.O.B. Kitchen Door. (Freight on Board) In other words, the food was right at the finger tips of the consumer. The specific data I want to find is the verification of the data that the HEALTH of the Nation skyrocketed to a very high state during WWI and WWII and that after the war, when the gardens dropped out, our overall nation's health went down drastically. I believe this to be true but want to see these statistics in writing. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Have fun researching. Doc and our wonderful moderators and all of you will get this vital data into the files for future reference. L, Valorie
