Guest guest
Dear all: Supplements are just that. We need them to fill the gaps in a good diet. They cannot take the place of good food. In today's hectic world it is harder all the time to do the basic things that kept previous generations going. Like sitting down for a home-cooked dinner at night. May I make a suggestion to my over-burdened younger sisters? Many of you have small children AND work away from home AND still do the bulk of the work that your grandmothers used to do in the house. It is too much, darn it! I can totally understand why you would take shortcuts with dinner and bring home something ready to go or eat out. Here is an idea: Cook from scratch, and use the money you save to hire someone to clean your house. It is amazing what a professional can do in 2 hours. I used to get someone just once every other week for 2 hours. It made a HUGE difference. Does it not make more sense to farm out your cleaning than your cooking? Which is more vital to the well-being of your family? If the help comes in on Friday you can start your weekend in a clean house, and spend part of it on food planning and preparation for the whole week. Labor intensive chores like cleaning vegetables can be done ahead of time. Cooking is a cinch when you have veggies chopped and ready in a tightly closed container in the fridge. You'll lose a few nutrients, but you'll eat more good stuff so you still come out ahead. Another idea: Pick a favorite radio program or get an audio book from the public library, and do kitchen chores while listening to it. Many a pot of soup from my kitchen is imbued with the vibration of Michael Enright's Sunday Morning on CBC. For more see http://savingdinner.com and http://flylady.net Happy planning and cooking!
