Guest guest
ginger is good for heartburn and indigestion. If you go to an oriental grocery, they have ginger candies there called ting ting jahe, which can be eaten as is (2 of them usually take care of heartburn for awhile) or you can dissolve them in hot water and drink like tea. or you can buy sliced, pickled ginger in a jar, even ginger ale would help, if it uses ginger instead of ginger flavor. I used to get terible heartburn, until a Japanese lady gave me some of the candies. They don't taste like any candy I had ever tasted...kind of hot and spicy. but they work! If you can't find them in an oriental grocery, you can get them on line. Do a search for Wing Hop Fung. (Im not associated with them, this is where I buy mine because it is half the price online than in a store) ....windflower --- Sherry Bakko <sbakko wrote: > > > What is a good herb for heartburn??? Guest guest
How Do You Treat Heartburn and GERD? Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, Feb, 2001 by Andrew Gaeddert Andrew Gaeddert[C] http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_2001_Feb/ai_707773 25 The most common symptom of GERD, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, is heartburn. Heartburn is usually experienced as a burning sensation behind the breastbone that may rise all the way to the face. Discomfort is caused by acid reflux from the stomach because the lower esophageal sphincter isn't working properly. Heartburn may accompany regurgitation or excessive saliva. Complications include esophageal stricture, ulceration, and Barrett's esophagus, a pre- cancerous lining of the esophagus. Inflammation of the esophagus may cause pain during swallowing and bleeding. Other symptoms of GERD may include nausea, burping, coughing, a bitter taste in the mouth, and respiratory conditions such as asthma, pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. Physicians conduct diagnostic tests such as X-ray, esophagoscopy, and a visual exam with a flexible tube. Other tests include measuring the lower esophageal sphincter, biopsy, and acidity tests. If you or a client suspects GERD, it is important to get a thorough diagnosis to rule out complications, respiratory disease, and heart conditions. Lifestyle suggestions to alleviate GERD and heartburn include elevating the head of your bed with 3-6 inch blocks, or foam wedges that lift your body from the waist up; sleeping on your left side, stress reduction, exercise, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol intake. It is important not to eat before going to bed. Eating 4-6 light meals a day, instead of two or three large meals is highly important. Food triggers may include dairy products, tomatoes, citrus fruits and beverages, garlic, peppermint and fish oil supplements. Gastroenterologists and other physicians treat GERD with antacids, and acid blocking drugs such as Prilosec and Prevacid. Side effects of these drugs include headaches, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea. Furthermore, symptoms may worsen once you stop taking the drug, and the underlying imbalance is not corrected. Finally, some individuals taking Prilosec for several years notice a degradation of the stomach lining. It may be helpful to experiment with a rotation diet such as the Digestive Clearing Program (see my book: Healing Digestive Disorders) to help identify food intolerance. Medications such as aspirin and other NSAIDs (non-steroid anti- inflammatory drugs), calcium channel blockers, asthma drugs, and hormones may cause reflux. According to Traditional (TCM), heartburn is usually caused by emotional upset and eating the wrong foods. Reflux is seen as rebellious qi that is rising where it should be sinking. Luckily there are several herbal remedies that can be used in addition to the lifestyle and dietary suggestions mentioned above. Ease Plus (Chai Hu Mu Li Long Gu Tang) contains:Qystershell Mu Li, DragonBone Long Gu, Bupleurum Chai Hu, Ginseng Ren Shen, Ginger Gan Jiang, Pinellia Ban Xia, Scute Huang Qin, Cinnamon Gui Zhi, Rhubarb Da Huang, Saussurea Mu Xiang, Oystershell Mu Li & Dragonbone Long Gu (fossilized minerals) are used to reverse reflux by quenching acidity and redirecting rebellious qi downward. Bupleurum Chai Hu, harmonizes qi and has anti-inflammatory properties. Rhubarb Da Huang, guides energy downward, Scute Huang Qin, a berberine- containing herb has anti-microbial properties, Saussurea Mu Xiang harmonizes the flow of qi. Ginseng Ren Shen and ginger Gan Jiang strengthen the digestive organs and calm nausea respectively. Finally, Pinellia Ban Xia harmonizes qi and dispels phlegm. In general I recommend combining Ease Plus with Quiet Digestion: (Poria Fu Ling, Coix Yi Yi Ren, Shen Chu Shen Qu, Magnolia Hou Po, Angelica Bai Zhi, Pueraria Ge Gen, Red Atractylodes Cang Zhu, Saussurea Mu Xiang, Pogostemon Huo Xiang, Oryza Gu Ya, Trichosanthes Root Tian Hua Fen, Chrysanthemum Ju Hua, Halloysite Chi Shi Zhi, Citrus Ju Hong, Mentha Bo He), a remedy traditionally used for food stagnation. With emotional distress combine Ease Plus with Escape Restraint (Yue Zhu Wan) which contains: Red Atractylodes root Cang Zhu, Ligusticum root Chuan Xiong, Cyperus rhizome Xiang Fu, Gardenia fruit Zhi Zi, Massa Fermentata extract Shen Qu. If the patient has copious phlegm, Ease Plus can be combined with Clear Phlegm (Wen Dan Tang): (Pinellia Ban Xia, Citrus Peel Chen Pi, Poria Fu Ling, Aurantium Zhi Shi, Bamboo Shavings Zhu Ru, Arisaema Tian Nan Xing, Agastache Huo Xiang, Acorus Shi Chang Po, Licorice Gan Cao). With heat signs including fast pulse and red tongue, and bitter acid regurgitation, Coptis Purge Fire is the adjunct of choice. It contains: (Coptis Huang Lian, Lophatherum Dan Zhu Ye, Bupleurum Chai Hu, Rehmannia Sheng Di Huang, Tang Kuei Dang Gui, Peony Bai Shao, Anemarrhena Zhi Mu, Akebia Mu Tong, Scute Huang Qin, Phellodendron Huang Bai, Alisma Ze Xie, Plantago Seed Che Qian Zi, Gentiana Long Dan Cao, Forsythia Lian Qiao, Gardenia Zhi Zi, Licorice Gan Cao, Sophora Ku Shen). Guest guest
1Tbs Apple Cider Vinegar in the morning and evening. A lot of heartburn actually is caused by the stomach not making enough acid! Drs. used to think it was too much acid. When it's just the other way around. vinegar adds the necessary acid to the stomach. Also digestive enzymes may help when taken 30 minutes prior to eating. Many of my clients that deal with heartburn or digestive issues are deficient in digestive enzymes, EFA's, minerals and amino acids. Guest guest
I had horrible heartburn the other night! I couldn't get enough vinegar down to help me, but did have some raw almonds. I slowly ate a few of them one at a time and it helped for awhile. Other home remedies I found on the internet that night (when I couldn't sleep) included Sprite, chewing gum, & apple cider vinegar. , " Diane " <roba wrote: > > Any good remedies? >
Guest guest
Oh, my husband use to get terrible heart burn every day. Any type of food would set it off. He would take about 3 droppers--sometimes straight and sometimes in a small glass of water--of Dr. Schulze's Digestive Tonic and the heart burn would stop. Again his web site is WWW.herbdoc.Com (I don't get a dime from this). It's tastes very strongly of peppermint because that is one of the best digestive herbs there is--and digestion is the key to heart burn. You can also drink some strong peppermint tea if you keep the tea bags on hand. Use at least 2 or 3 bags per cup of tea. This (the tonic) would stop his heart burn almost immediately. He wound up carrying the bottle of tonic in his pocket when we went out. But when I read the book Fit For Life by the Diamonds, and I had him start eating his carbs and protein separately, he quit having heart burn or any digestive problems at all. And he got this relief after just three days on the " program " --he felt wonderful, no bloating, no heart burn, no cramps. All you do is eat meat and veggies at one meal, and your carbs and veggies at the other meal. No meat and carb together. No bread and meat, no pasta and meat, no potatoes and meat. Meat and veggies (other than potatoes) so you can have a big salad, or veggies any way you want to eat them, but no bread, no pasta, with the meat. When you want potatoes or pasta, just have it with everything except meat. So if you want potatoes you can have a nice salad, some veggies and a big baked potatoes with toppings that don't include protein--so no cheese, no bacon bits, etc. But you can have sour cream and butter. The Fit For Life books are very interesting and informative. I would recommend them to anyone. Samala, Renee---PS, shouldn't this post be considered an advertisement, 'cause even though I'm not making any money off it, I'm sure sending someone off to Schulze's web site or the book store to buy one of these products. :-) That's why it's so important to let everyone state what they want about what works and what doesn't work, even if they--gasp!!--make some money off it. Just about EVERYTHING we post here is word-of-mouth advertising for someone! And trust me, if Schulze had an affiliate program, I believe in his products so much I'd be selling them. So, according to some people here, if I were selling them I therefore wouldn't be able to mention these great products, and people would go on suffering with heartburn. Just doesn't make sense to me. ---- I had horrible heartburn the other night! Guest guest
for heartburn, Pineapple best fresh and papaya also best fresh. There are papaya and pineapple tabs at places like Trader Joes.called Bromelain,( Latin name for Pineapple) But canned is good, fresh is better. Also do like the old folks did, no liquids with food. Liquids should be consumed after eating and then should only be a glass of water at room temperature only. You can also get swedish bitters and follow instructions on the bottle. Peace, thyme
