Good Morning--my daughter came home from school yesterday with the

dreaded note that someone in her class was sent home with head lice!!!!

UGH!!!She doesn't have it yet---but just in case does anyone know of

an alternative treatment..so I can be prepared in case she gets it. I

understand a few drops of tea tree oil in shampoo helps...is there

anything else??Happy Holidays to all...thank-you for your help!!!!!Liz

It sounds messy and it is but I do it and it works everytime. I have four

kids and it even keeps them from passing it to each other. First coat hair

w/vasaline or hair grease wrap in plastic wrap and leave on for a few hours or

even

over night. This smothers anything alive just like the old mayo trick, but

here is the catch. AFTER this wash it out with dawn dish soap, and pour white

vinegar over the hair or put it in a spray bottle and saturate the hair and wrap

in plastic and do the same either over night or a few hours. This breaks down

the glue that hold the nits or eggs on. Wash with dawn again. Then blowdry

hair completely and even a little longer then needed because the heat will kill

any eggs that didnt wash out. I always braid my girls hair because it keeps it

up and can be a little greasy still. This is why people who use hair grease

all the time dont get lice! Also regular use of tea tree oil shampoo or tar

shampoo is supposed to prevent getting them. Also denorex shampoo is supposed to

work to prevent and kill them, but I havent tried this one.

HI Liz, Lindane is a powerful pesticide & lots of kids have

really bad reaction to it, especially since in soaks into the skin &

can stay in the system. Some schools are starting to send home a

recommendation to slather the head & hair in Mayonnaise, wrap the

head in plastic & send the kid to bed, then in the morning wash the

hair good. You still have to pick off the nits.

When I worked in the Pharmacy I got Head Lice from a

customer. I found out while giving myself a Hot Oil Treatment. I

was rubbing about a quarter cup of cooking oil through my hair when I

felt " sand " in my hair. Closer inspection revealed

Nits! Horrors!! I continued with my Hot Oil Treatment, figuring to

call my Doc for an Rx to get some Lindane as soon as I was done. So

then I wrapped my head & hair in plastic & started wringing out the

hot towels from the pan heating on the stove. After 20 minutes of

steaming hot towels, then I removed the plastic bag & washed my

hair. To my surprise the heat & the oil had loosened the

" cement-glue " that Lice adhere the eggs to the hair follicle

with. ALL the eggs -Nits- washed out. I still went through my hair

with a fine tooth comb, but nothing!! I was so happy, I even told my

boss, so she could let parents know there is another way to get rid

of Head Lice!!

We went through this last year when not once but three times our friends'

children got lice from public school and decided to share ;)

Hellmann's Mayonnaise slathered on dry hair and then wrapped in plastic wrap

Leave on for a couple hours or overnight if possible and then rinse with

vinegar.

You will still need to use a nit comb on everyone but the mayonnaise was

much safer and less expensive than the OTC products available.

Well, this is kinda odd but my mother swears by it.

Once upon a time my mother watched kids during the day. One of the

kids had a really bad case of head lice that her mother just couldn't

seem to get rid of. My mother had read 'somewhere' to get a jar of the

old standby " Dippity Doo " from the drugstore. (Us ladies of a certain

age will remember the product very well and the commercials that went

with it.)

She coated the little girls head clear down to the roots with a thick

layer of Dippity Doo, wrapped the childs head in saran wrap and left it

on for a half hour.

Then they shampooed and shampooed and shampooed it out along with all

the lice and eggs.

My mom swears that it did the trick and there were no more problems

with head lice.

I can't vouch for it myself but it's a cheap thing to try and shouldn't

be toxic to the child.

Add Tea Tree Oil to her shampoo and use that all over her body. You can

add a bit of Tea Tree Oil to your final rinse water too. MY

understanding is lice don't like the smell of the Tea Tree Oil so they

won't land on her.

Remind her not to share a brush, comb, hat, jacket, hair clips or

barrettes...ANYTHING hair related with anyone.

Hi,

I have used this on my three kids when my youngest came home with the buggers.

In oil, any type you have on hand, vegetable, olive ect.

to every one tsp oil add 2 drops of each peppermint, geranium, eucalyptus, and

lavender. Massage in hair and leave for thirty minutes. Comb with fine tooth

comb.

wash with your normal shampoo twice and rinse hair in 1/4 cup apple cider

vinegar and 1 cup water with 2 drops each if pappermint, geranium, eucalyptus,

and lavender oil. Then comb with a fine tooth comb.

You can repeat everyday as needed. We did not see any after the first day. Now

everytime we hear of the possibility we start using the rinse to ward off the

possibility.

I can't remember where I read this, but it is harmless to try:

rub the scalp with mayonnaise. Coat all the hair, it suffocates

the lice and nits. A lot safer than those toxic shampoos!

you might want to pass this on the parents of the child

who was sent home. I hope you won't have to test it.

All the best

Hi There,

I have 2 beautiful daughters with hair down to their bottoms!!!! we

have had head lice!!!! its a real bother - we use NEEM soap its great

it kills the critters straight away - but you have to remove the eggs

(nits) yourself - you can comb conditioner through dry hair with a nit

comb to do this.

Hopefully you will remain headlice free and wont have the bother!!!!

I also use a mixture of tea tree, lavender and filtered water (just

spray on there hair every day) I also plait the hair everyday so its

not flying around.

Regards
