Guest guest
Hi Sharron, I'm a Chiropractor and I always try to encourage people to get physical. It might be that you are still in the beginning stages of adjustments that your doctor does not want you doing too much until you are more stable (that said without knowing you or your doc) however, it is always important to find a teacher in the physical arts who knows what they're doing. I've had patients who went to yoga and the like and where guided to do things that further complicated their injuries. By contrast, I have a patient now with a very serious Knee injury who us working with her Kung-fu instructor to strengthen her knee and body to help recover-and is doing fantastic! So naturally you should take up Kung-fu... Just kidding Talk to a few yoga, pilates and tai chi people, here the different voices and body languages of each and pick one. Then listen to your body. Remember, any doctor is a teacher and it is still the patient who is ultimately responsible for what is taught. When someone tells me to stop something I believe in, I always translate it to 'be mindful' instead of 'stop.' good luck, Dr. Evan ps. For the record, I have a deep respect for yoga, unfortunately like all things, there are hacks doing it as well as masters. Must remember to sort them out! Use of pilates for strengthening back/core muscles, even though I hav Posted by: " sharonsherryfur " sharonsherryfur sharonsherryfur Tue Dec 5, 2006 3:26 pm (PST) Hi,everyone. Perhaps someone knows whether Pilates Yoga can be used to help with p[roblems in the lumbar portion of the spine. My Chiropractor warns me against Pilates Yogta, saying because of my " thinned " spinal discs I could damage myself further. From what I have been told,as long as I take care NOT to compress the discs further, I should be able to do SOME form of beginning Pilates. My Chiropractor is an excellent one,but I fear that he is beginning to develop a severe case of " greed-i-test " and is only concerned with me returning again and again instead of rectifying the situation. The problem with the lumbar area of my spine again manifested two years ago ( almost to the week). I have dealt with him before that period ( back in 1988) At that time, X-rays were taken and the thin discs were in evidence. He was able to take care of the problem then. Now,it is almost as if he is rubbing his hands together in glee every time a patient comes in. Anyway, enough of my complaining and casting quasi-aspersions on his character, etc. Has anyone used Pilates for lumbar-spine treatments. What has been your experience/results?
