My 3 yr old (well, almost three) occasionally has very hard stool. Once

it caused fissures. Im not sure if shes holding it in until this point

because she doesnt want to go on the potty or if she doesnt want to go

in her diaper and just wont say anything about having to use the potty

or what. All I know is that she gets constipated and I was wondering

what you guys recommend. Ive been using Karo syrup in some milk and

that works but I was wondering if there were any other tips you guys

had.TIA ~Kelly

Prunes always helped my children. If you can get a her to eat a jar of baby food

prunes I bet it would help.

Also, FYI - cow's milk can be constipating

kelly,

2 things....one karo syrup is not a good choice, any corn syrups arent

good for her system..the other is that milk is very constipating in

itself...

does she drink water at all? our children drink no juices (which can

be constipating)

take a close look at her diet...look at foods that are constipating or

lacking fiber..

try giving her foods with more fiber in them that will appeal to her

also do you give her omega 3's (my 2 yr old love coromega it tastes

like orange pudding) that will help her tremendously

hope this helps

Give her apples and/or macadamia nuts. They're both natural laxatives.

This generally points to nutrition. One person's nutritional needs are

different from another and sometimes you have to work to meet an

individual's needs.

The more processed foods you feed her, the less efficiently her digestive

system is going to work. Mac and Cheese, bread, cookies, all have nearly

useless fiber leading to hard mass in the bowels. Deficiencies of magnesium

will also cause problems because this mineral is consumed by the smooth

muscles of the intestine to properly move foods along.

At 3 she does not need a lot of milk. This can cause many digestive problems

as we age and meat should be less than 20% of her total calories.

For children, here's a general guideline that might help you.

* Vegetables: 2 servings, preferably leafy dark green vegetables each

day

* Fruit: 1-3 servings, some dried fruit every two or three days

* Grains and serials: 4-5 servings (whole grains)

* Nuts and sees, legumes: 1-2 servings (including nut butters, tahini,

lentils and mashed beans)

* Eggs (optional): 3 servings, or yogurt, tofu

Compare this list, which outlines complete daily nutrition, to what your

child is currently eating and you might find the hole.

Nutrition is a puzzle and you must have all of the pieces.

High quality nutritional supplements will fill in the holes for vital

micronutrients which might not be perfectly available in the food from day

to day.

Because you've already been faced with one significant health issue with her

over this, you may need to get a little radical and throw away all snacks

(including boxed cereal) and move to this diet. She may fuss at first, but

she won't starve and then eventually she'll thrive. :-)

Hope this helps,

-Dave

Hi

My daughter will be 5 in January and she has been suffering from constipation

since she was 6 months old. I tried everything in the book! We have both

suffered tremendously and she has seen so many doctors. I noticed that when I

reduced her milk intake she got better. Another thing that I did was give her

peach nectar. Its amazing! I use it myself as well :) Hope this helps.

my husband had severe constipation as a baby and young child due to allergies to

milk products. the symptoms subsided with age, but now he has other issues with

lactose-it affects him differently. your child might always have this allergy

and it's best to take them off the products for at least 30 days to see if the

symptoms subside.
