Menopause - hot flashes

Hi! :-)

First of all, let me tell you how helpful it has been, for me, to belong

to this group - I'm learning a lot from this mailing list!

Now, my personal problem:

- I'm 57 and have been suffering from hot flashes for (at least...) the

last 7 years! ;

- I've tried a lot of remedies - homeopathy, herbs, even Black Kohoch! -

and nothing helps in what concerns my terrible hot flashes! My doctor

says she doesn't remember having a patient like me, because nothing

seems to work...

Lately, I've been thinking about acupuncture, though I don't know anyone

using it for hot flashes, so I've got no idea if acupuncture works for

this purpose...

So, the question is:

- does anyone know if acupuncture is used with good results for hot

flashes?

Any information will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your answers and your help! :-)

My mom takes something called wild yam cream. You could look that up, I don't

know much about it but she says it helps.

Maria asked:

flashes?

Yes, it is!

Though of course individual results vary.

Acupuncture is great for regulating and

normalizing the body, including menopausal

problems.

I had severe flooding at the start of

menopause.

Two sessions of acupuncture took care

of it and it never came back.

Sometimes cold showers are the only answer. Ask me how I know. I suffer from hot

flashes as well and sometimes that's the only way I can actually get them to

settle.

Maria,

I suggest you do a saliva test for hormones. Read up on bio-identical hormone

therapy. I started this about three weeks ago. After about one week, my hot

flashes ended. I work with a doctor and a compounding pharmacist. You need to

balance your homones and the hot flashes will disappear.

I use Black Cohosh Root, liquid....put a few drops in a little water, drink it

down. I think I did this a couple times a day...doesn't take them totally away,

but defininetly takes the edge off, helps with bad cramps too. Hope that helps!

I used acupuncture to help the symptoms of endometriosis, bad periods and now hot

flashes and lack of energy/memory stuff from menopause. I HIGHLY recommend it.

My acupuncturist also gave me chinese herbs to help with low yin because of

menopause. So ask about herbal support also.

Black cohosh work best combined with other herbs. It does NOT provide quick

relief. You need to take for 2-3 weeks before results are seen. I was on HRT

and did a slow switch over. Now I only that herbs to control menopause and I

have menopause from hell. Black cohosh provides the estrogen you need and wild

yam will provide the progestrone you also need.

Well the Black Cohosh worked within a day for me, the hot flashes were reduced

by half, and the cramps were diminshed too. I can only share as it worked for

me....worked better than the wild yam containing creams. I think you have to

try it and see what works for you.

I have studied this lots as I had horrible hot flashes and now using

progesterone (and NOT Progestin) I finally have my hot flashes gone after

years with them! Black Cohosh is an estrogen, so you are still using

estrogen, which most women do not need. Almost all women have too much

estrogen - even in menopause. Only a *very* *small* percentage of women

really need extra estrogen. Most women need to take progesterone to balance

out their already too high estrogen. And take progesterone MADE from Wild

Yams, not wild yam cream. Wild Yam cream is not the same and will not help.

Once you get your hormones balanced with progesterone and no more estrogen,

your hot flashes should go away.

Unless you are in menopause because you got cancer and all your female organs

were takend from you - like me. Then all the doctors say no estrogen. Makes it

hard to handle the hormone imbalances.

I agree

Progesterone works wonders, and is completely depleted once one

enters menopause. Estrogen is usually still produced at about 1/3 in

most women.

My mother had breast cancer and is a survivor. She can not have any

kind of estrogen. I had a hysterectomy and they left the ovaries. I

am having hot flashes all the time. They make me sick. I can't take

any estrogen man made or alternative. The body doesn't know the

difference. So I suffer, but I think of the alternative and I

consider myself lucky so far.

The SSRI antidepressants can greatly reduce hotflashes. Even the gut

neurotransmitter enhancers like Amitiza, which is an rx for IBS, will

do that, bypassing the need for synthetic estrogen - at least for hot

flashes. Phyto-estrogen from herbs and plants is a much more benign

form of estrogen and can help - fermented soy, black cohosh, red

clover,etc... if SSRI's are not desired.

Aimee, and anyone else who is leery of

ingesting substances, please consider any

of the healing arts for your trouble.

The answer to health is not always something

to swallow!

Acupuncture, Reflexology, Emotional Freedom

Technique have all helped people with hormonal

problems, without having to worry about estrogen

or other hormones.

I am not sure what country you reside in, but I live in the USA. Doctors here

told me nothing was wrong with me (via blood tests) when menopause started. I

finally got a nurse to listen and help. I started on estrogen and all my

symptoms were gone. I then did a slow turn over to herbal medicine and still no

hot flashes and everything is under control. Doctors do NOT always know best.

Listen to your body, it know what it needs.

Hi!

I want to thank all the members who were kind enough to give advice and

share their knowledge/personal experience with me. You gave me a lot of

hints and possible solutions - I'll print all the answers, and then

decide where to start... ;-) Thanks for caring...

I live in Portugal and I don't know if I can find here all the products

I read about on your emails, and writing to the group has an extra

difficulty for me: the language barrier (specially when it concerns

these specific health subjects...). However - and as Black Kohosh was

mentioned in several emails - I can tell you I tried it for about 3

weeks and no results at all...

With all the information you gave me now I'll decide what to do next,

and I'll keep you informed and let you know if something works...

Thanks, once again! :-)

Maria, your English and grammar are exceptional.

I have only seen it spelled, Black Cohosh, with a 'c' rather than a 'k'. I

have no idea what it is called in Portugese, but perhaps there is a

translating program on the Net somewhere, or if someone knows the Latin

term, that is universal.

Susan,

For years I went to doctors for perimenopause and they kept telling me that it

was all in my head. So I have quit going to them and now use only herbals. At

the age of 51, I've been told that I look like I'm in my forties. To my way of

thinking, herbals are the best way to go.
