Hi Jill, Thanks for the response. My patient has recently had an MRI and will

get the results along with the organ ultrasound results this week. I am waiting

to hear the results of that before using herbs to activate the blood. though i

have begun with a modified jin gui shen qi tang with small amount of gui zhi fu

ling wan. I like your suggestion of ge xia zhu yu.

interesting to note that my patient also has broken viens on the ankles. hers

are lateral and extremely thin and red. they have been there for many years.

Dean,

I also have a (52 year old male) patient also with polycystic kidney

disease. He just found out three weeks ago and went last week to a

Kidney specialist who recommended he get an MRI(scheduled next week)

of the brain because of the risk of aneurism in the brain is high

with people with PKD. Also a heart murmur often shows up with PKD.

It is considered a genetic disease. Perhaps those relatives of hers

had it as well and they died of the bleeding before the disease

showed up. Sounds like the family history would recommend the MRI to

your patient. There is late onset and early onset. If it is late

onset then the Western treatment is stabilise blood pressure and

watch and wait until/if the patient needs dialysis. Often with the

late onset they do not need dialysis.

My patient has been coming to me for acupuncture off and on for a

year. After his diagnosis he wanted to start with Chinese herbs,

even though I couldn't get him to take them before his diagnosis.

My patient has mild to moderate back pain intermittantly, high blood

pressure that is controlled with medication. He has a tendency to

get irritable(also has some cysts on his Liver), he also has some

bloating, mild depression and severe fatigue(all of which is much

better after regular acu). He retains water really easily and is cold

more often than not. The cysts(in Kidneys) are considered by the

MD's to be fluid( " like a mucus " said his Kidney MD) and blood filled.

He has purple broken veins on the inside of his ankles and a purple

hue to the area around Du 3. He is a tall and big man with moderate

to severe kyphosis. His tongue is a red/pale with purple tone off and

on. White thin coat mod. crack in MJ area. Slightly large. pulse

mostly slippery-often changes to wiry sometimes slow and deep but

strong in the proximal.

Diagnosis; Kidney Qi and Yang insufficiency with retention of

dampness, blood stagnation and liver qi depression.

I don't have his formula in front of me but I have been giving jin

gui shen qi tang modified and with ge xia zhu yu tang proportions

depending on whether it is more Liver or Kidney signs and symptoms.

I also have been trying to drain damp by adding more fu ling, yiyi

ren and rou gui for the yang as needed.

His kidney MD is concerned about him taking Chinese Herbs and told

him that Chinese herbs can cause nephritis. I am hoping to have a

dialogue with his doctor and will give him a list of everything I

give him. By the way he has been feeling a lot better since taking

the herbs. If you want I can give you more details with the chart in

front of me. With a genetic disorder like this I would look at

taking herbs but to make sure that he takes a break from them from

time to time.(does anyone have thoughts on this with a progressive

kidney disease?) He comes for acupuncture every month before the

diagnosis and now he has been coming every week. By the way, I have

had my nose in Bob's Western Disease book (as well as Western Med.

books)quite often since his diagnosis.

I don't know if any of this pertains to your patient but the MRI

seems to be the highest priority.

I would also welcome feedback on my case as well as Dean's.

Good Luck
