Special Announcement A research team based at the Veterans Medical Center in North Chicago, Illinois is due to report in the upcoming issue of OPTOMETRY that a lutein dietary supplement has been shown to reverse some parameters of macular degeneration for the first time. While the study group was small, nearly all of the patients taking lutein supplements showed improvement in contrast or glare vision, or reduction of blind spots. Previous studies involving zinc and antioxidants only marginally slowed down the progression of this age-related eye disorder. Until now, no therapy has been shown to reverse loss of central vision. Dr. Stuart Richer, OD, PhD, the lead researcher, says the study used 10 milligrams of lutein and he suggest dietary supplements for the eyes provide that much lutein. Lutein is a yellow pigment that accumulates at the back of the eyes and is provided in the diet from foods like spinach and kale. Lutein in dietary supplements is derived from marigold flower petals.
