Some whole foods (papaya, pineapple) contain many more enzymes than required to digest themselves, and the extra enzymes can be used to digest other foods or be absorbed and used elsewhere in the body. Isolated enzymes taken alone can be very useful in reducing inflammation, for example the product Wobenzym, which has been studied extensively in Europe. For more info on enzymes as supplements see: http://www.supplementwatch.com/supatoz/supplement.asp?supplementId=109 David E.
