ADHD and dental problems!

A new study of children (128 case-control pairs) shows that those with ADHD have

nearly 12 times the odds of having diseased, missing and filled teeth than those

without ADHD. Researchers in New Zealand controlled for fluoride history,

medical problems, diet, and self-reported oral hygiene before coming to this

conclusion. They suggest: “Dental practitioners and parents should consider ADHD

to be a condition that may affect children's dental caries experience.”

Interesting research! The task, of course, is to now pinpoint causal

relationships that will make sense out of this connection. Does dental work

(i.e., mercury in fillings) lead to hyperactivity? Do nutritional deficiencies

underlie both problems? ABSTRACT

The myth continues! Journal article on ADD and diet

Small wonder mainstream doctors think diet has little to do with attention

deficit disorder. Last year a literature review was published (ABSTRACT) that

concluded diet can be important for some disorders but, they report: " The

dietary treatment of ADD with or without hyperactivity consists of elimination

diets such as the Feingold diet and megavitamins. Although the results of

several controlled studies are contradictory, there is no scientific evidence

that sugar, artificial food colorings or sweeteners are responsible for behavior

or learning problems in children.”

Did this researcher read the same studies we read? Sadly, busy physicians will

scan the abstract and it will reinforce their misguided belief that diet does

not affect ADD/ADHD. You be the judge! Go to the Feingold Association’s home

page http://www.Feingold.org and click on Scientific Research, then ADD/ADHD.

Controlled studies are starred. (FYI--the Feingold Association focuses

primarily on additives, not sugars.)

Bipolar disorder is starting at younger ages in the U.S. Stimulants and

antidepressants may be the cause.

New research compares the prevalence of bipolar disorder in the U.S. to that in

the Netherlands. The authors found that among adults and adolescents, bipolar

disorder has a similar prevalence in both locations. But many more young

children are diagnosed with bipolar in the U.S. than the Netherlands. They

hypothesize that this earlier onset may be due to the greater use of

antidepressants and stimulants for depression or ADHD by U.S. children,

suggesting that for kids who are genetically at risk to develop bipolar

disorder, the drugs can trigger a switch to a manic state.
