Guest guest
Hi Robin, I had a loose wisdom tooth for a few years. My dentist was loath to extract it because of the knock-on effect of losing a tooth which corresponds with the one below for chewing purposes. So I hung onto it for at least 3 years, knowing that it was getting looser all the time. I put up with a periodically swollen gum around the tooth, itching in my eustacian tube on that side due to low level infection, occasional swelling in my ear, with little lumps that bled when I cleaned my ear...the hinge of my jaw would swell up now and then. In the end I'd had enough. It began to hurt when I bit down. I went to my dentist (there are no holistic or alternative dentists in my part of the UK), though I do have private insurance with a regular dentist. I asked him to remove the tooth because it was eroding my jaw bone - it had risen up partly, in an effort, no doubt on behalf of my immune system to attempt to shed the tooth. It came out like a dream. It almost jumped out, and it didn't even bleed because my jaw had already shut off the blood supply. In a sense, I haven't looked back since. Getting rid of the tooth removed absolutely every symptom I'd been suffering for the last year or so within a few days. I didn't even have antibiotics, I just ate the right foods to boost my immunity, and the gum was healed up completely within a week. I got the strong feeling that my mouth heaved a big sigh of relief when that tooth went. There was nothing at all that could have been done physically to reset the tooth into my jaw and make it stable, especially since my jaw was rejecting the tooth in a big way. My dentist is a fairly good one, for a standard dentist He did outline the problems to me that may follow on losing a back tooth, especially a wisdom. The tooth above may grow longer over time and press into the jaw below, having nothing to grind on now, but this takes years to happen. The result was that my jaw is slightly less stable when chewing on that side, having an important grinding tooth missing because the tooth's loss affects your bite a little. I can bite my cheek or lip more easily, because I've lost the 'anchor' on that side of my mouth. I still try to chew there as much as possible to keep the gum on that side healthy, and so far, two years later, it's still fine. My gum on that side is pink, pristine and firm now, not inflamed and soft, the way it used to be when the loose tooth was still in there. The most important thing is to resolve the infection in your mouth, regardless of the tooth, (though it's always a shame to have to lose one) which seems to be way past it's useful life now. As long as it's there, you'll have chronic infection and it will never go away completely as long as there are gaps around the tooth for bacteria to enter and affect the health of the jaw bone and gum. And maybe your ear and digestive system too, to an extent. Maybe a consultation with an alternative dentist might throw up a new idea or two for you. If so, do let us know! regards, S ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On 16 Mar 2004, at 23:32, Robin Stewart wrote: > Despite posting a question in the dental topic of the message board and > posting the same one here a few times my tooth is still loose.
