Guest guest
Cadmium Toxicity A toxic trace metal, cadmium can be detrimental to your health. Like lead, cadmium accumulates in the body and has varying degrees of toxicity. Cadmium replaces the body’s stores of the essential mineral zinc in the liver and kidneys. Not surprisingly, therefore, cadmium levels rise in people who have zinc deficiencies. Elevated levels of cadmium may result in hypertension (high blood pressure); a dulled sense of smell, anemia, joint soreness; hair loss, dry scaly skin, and loss of appetite. Cadmium toxicity threatens the health of the body by weakening the immune system. It causes a decreased production of T lymphocytes (T cells), key white blood cells that protect he body by destroying foreign invaders and cancer cells. Because cadmium is retained in the kidneys and liver, excessive exposure can lead to kidney disease and serious liver damage. Possible effects of intense cadmium exposure include emphysema, cancer, and shortened life span. Tobacco smoke: cigarettes, cigar or pipe contains cadmium and studies have shown that cig smokers have higher levels of cadmium in their bodies than non smokers. You can also accumulate cadmium from secondhand smoke. Cadmium is used in plastics and in the production of nickel cadmium batteries. In addition to cig smoke and plastics, common sources of cadmium exposure includes drinking (tap) water, fertilizer, fungicides, pesticides, soil, air pollution, refined processed grains, rice, coffee, tea and soft drinks. Natural Remedies: Alfalfa contains chlorophyll and vitamin K, and helps to remove cadmium from the body. Take 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams in tablet form daily. Make sure that you include plenty of fiber and apple pectin in your diet. Also eat pumpkin seeds and other foods that are high in zinc. Some examples are cold water fish, organic eggs, fresh garlic cloves, lentils, legumes, dried cooked beans and organic whole grains. Many drugs interfere with zinc absorption. Some examples are diuretics used for hypertension and oral contraceptives. Calcium bicarbonate used in hard tap water interferes with zinc absorption. Folic acid in large doses interferes with zinc absorption in the blood. 73 percent of the zinc is removed from white flour during the milling process. Chelation removes toxic metals from the body.
