Guest guest
Sun, 22 Feb 2004 22:55:07 -0600 Diane Farsetta mad cow update Dear Weekly Spin rs, We wrote you a few weeks ago about our Mad Cow Public Education Campaign, asking for your help in stopping the spread of mad cow disease in the US. Here are some recent developments: * We can celebrate a major victory! On January 26, the US Food and Drug Administration banned the feeding of blood to cattle. I had been raising this issue in major media interviews, saying again and again: " We're weaning calves on cattle blood proteins, even though we know blood plasma can carry the disease. " Industry (and industry insiders turned federal officials) ridiculed my warnings, but now it's the law of the land. * An expert panel advising the USDA recently concluded (just as we foresaw in our book Mad Cow USA) that the disease has been spreading in the US for a decade, and continues to be spread through still-officially-sanctioned infected feed. This makes our work all the more urgent. * Unfortunately, we have NOT yet heard from most of you. We need your support to end the very real human and animal health threat posed by mad cow disease. Please, go to the link below and contribute now: https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?id=1118 We know exactly what must be done to defeat mad cow disease: a complete ban on feeding slaughterhouse waste to livestock and testing millions of cattle for mad cow disease. Despite our recent victories, the government continues to protect the powerful livestock industry and refuses to implement these essential safeguards. With your support, we will be able to continue and expand our Mad Cow Public Education Campaign, doing in-depth investigative reporting and working with public interest, consumer rights and environmental groups to inform the public, press and policymakers on the issue. Please donate today: https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?id=1118 Anyone contributing $100 or more will receive an autographed copy of our updated Mad Cow USA paperback. Help us raise $100,000 in support of our Mad Cow Public Education Campaign. Thanks for your support!
