Guest guest
http://mercola.com/2004/feb/21/diet_drugs_cancer.htm Diet Drugs May Raise Cancer Risk Researchers have found a drug, which has been developed to fight obesity and clogged arteries, may increase the risk of colon cancer. Researchers worked with a copy of GlaxoSmithKline’s experimental compound, known as GW501516. This compound is being studied as a possible drug to improve cholesterol levels and to reverse heart disease in humans caused by metabolic syndrome, also known as syndrome X. Syndrome X is linked to high blood pressure and poor cholesterol levels. Researchers gave the drug to mice that were specially bred to develop colon cancer and found that the mice grew twice the normal number of polyps. This result means that patients who already have polyps--which don’t cause any symptoms--may be at a higher risk of developing colon cancer if given the drugs, researchers say. Because of the finding, researchers suggest that companies testing these drugs need to do more studies before testing them on humans. News February 2, 2004 Dr. Mercola's Comment: It is not unusual for drugs to cause side effects that are even worse than the ailment they are supposed to treat. Fortunately, there are much better options for fighting obesity than taking pills such as: Reducing grains and sugars: When you eat grains and sugar your insulin levels will increase. When you increase your insulin levels you are telling your body to store carbohydrates as fat, and not to release any of the stored fat. This makes it impossible for you to use your own stored body fat for energy. So the excess carbohydrates in your diet not only make you fat, they make sure you stay fat. To learn more vital information on insulin and how increasing your levels can damage your body please read Dr. Rosedale’s article, " Insulin and Its Metabolic Effects " . Following the nutrition plan for your metabolic type: Knowing your own metabolic type will help you learn the right (and wrong) foods to eat to fit your own body’s metabolism and prevent diseases. What may be very healthy for others is not necessarily as healthy for you, and vice-versa. Eating according to your metabolic type is one of the best ways to ascertain what is really good for you. Exercising: You need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to experience any weight loss benefits. Major studies have shown that 60 minutes a day is actually best. Ideally, the exercise should be continuous, but it could be split up into two 30-minute sections. Most heavy people start with walking and that is an excellent choice, as it is low-risk and inexpensive. Once you become comfortable with a routine, it is important to increase the intensity in order to continue benefiting.
