Guest guest
Study: Antibiotics May Double Women's Cancer Risk Scientists Study Heavy Usage Among 10,000 Patients UPDATED: 5:32 PM CST February 16, 2004 DALLAS -- A new study of more than 10,000 women found those who took antibiotics for more than 500 days had twice the risk of breast cancer as those who had taken no antibiotics. According to doctors, it's too early to draw conclusions, and they are quick to add that all antibiotics are not suspect. But they are urging more research to evaluate the new findings. Dr. David Euhus, of the University of Texas Southwestern Center for Breast Care, said the study in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association presented startling findings. " The actual risk was about a twofold increase between women who never used antibiotics and women who used 50 prescriptions, " Euhus said. That many prescriptions is considered heavy antibiotic use, and the association's study found that women who had more than 25 prescriptions during a period of 17 years were at increased risk. For women who took the medicine less often, the risk was much smaller. The new research came as a shock to patients like Joan Dressler, who not only takes antibiotics regularly, but also has a family history of breast cancer. " My goodness. I've been doing this for 30 years, and I'm not sure what that exactly means, " she said of the findings. Her questions have yet to be answered by researchers. " It's very important to note that we can't say from this study that antibiotics actually caused the increased breast cancer risk, " researcher Christine Velicer said. Health experts warn that the study shouldn't be used to set health policy, but that it should prompt more research. " Is it the antibiotics causing the breast cancer, or is it the infection, or the woman's own immune system that made the antibiotics necessary? Is that what's causing the breast cancer? " Euhus said. The current theory, according to researchers, is that antibiotics may increase the risk of breast cancer by interfering with the body's immune response to infection. However, for the time being, health experts urge women who routinely take antibiotics to talk with their doctors about the risks and benefits. Although I find this article very troubling and would be the first to agree that all allopathic drugs due to their chemical nature are a very large part of the cancer 'epidemic', in my opinion there is yet another drug which is more closely linked to breast cancer than frequent use of antibiotics! Close to a decade or more ago, there was a warning issued over the internet regarding specific drugs which are used to dry up mother's milk (yes, the little white pill they give you the morning after). At that time the warnings were all over the web. I have since discovered that these websites no longer exist and the warnings have been conveniently hushed up. As we all know there is no truth in the media. In the light of what happened with the previous warnings I am really quite shocked to that this one would be allowed to surface at all! I thought this was an opportune time to reiterate previous warnings as well! If you are a woman, just had a child and are not breast feeding...Please!!...do not take the little white pill to dry up your breasts, rather let it dry up NATURALLY!! Regardless of what you've been told it will do this and in a very short time It MAY VERY WELL SAVE YOUR LIFE! I know I know, the eagle eyes are upon you, however it is time that we learn to stand up for our rights as women! There is a vital link to these drugs and we must not let it pass unnoticed! Hugs and Bright Blessings! JoAnn
