Guest guest
Frank I think its going a bit far to throw Atkins into a pool of those unconcerned about healthy eating and only weight loss. I found him quite the contrary. One of his books is about vita nutrients which he frequently used to treat medical problems instead of prescription medicines. That book deals with many various health issues. He also rates foods as the most nutrient dense with the least sugar and promotes their consumption - I have yet to find such rankings elsewhere. Everything I have pursued checking out indicates he did his homework quite well. Excess weight is not simply about vanity - it is itself a very unhealthy state and frequently represents insulin resistant problems. I don't think there is a better diet when one is in such a state. Even the Weston Price group does not address diabetes that I have seen, nor weight loss. There are many of Price followers who are Atkins followers as well because the two are so similar in schools of thought. While Enig disagrees with him on % of protein, she does express respect for him. Atkins actually stated he took ideas from that group. Those who have had insulin resistant problems enhance their health awareness and healthy eating through the Price group, but still limit and count their carbs as they learned from Atkins to do. I don't know what low carb boards people are talking about but the one I read has a few thousand members and suffice to say, is one big collective group of bioindividuals. Some are very much into " low carb " phony food products - at the moment. It seems more common for new comers which is understandable. Others are not at all. The majority of members rarely post, so I would not venture to say most who follow Atkins are one way or another way. But I can say that there have been two occasions of heated up discussion. One was regarding soy - some are strong advocates, others won't touch it at all. All are quite prepared to substantiate their opinions. The other occasion was when a self proclaimed research nutritionist treaded waters there once and tried to tell everyone they were headed for doom and death by eating Atkins, and should be following the USDA pyramid. He was cut up into little pieces and chased off the board. The strongest attacks came from people who had diabetes. Unfortunately for them, they had done their learning on healthy eating post diagnosis. Having learned their lessons the hard way, they were very informed on healthy eating and had no tolerance for unhealthy establishment ideas. That also is unique to each individual person. When a person focuses so strongly on that aspect they usually are somewhat blind to the more important aspect of health. Health gets subverted to image.>> And this is not said enough - thankyou! I've lurked in a few low-carb forums and have been a bit shocked how little health is addressed. I haven't read Atkins nor any of the other low-carb diet books - but my sense from forums and internet sites is that there is a real lack of health politics in the diet theories. There seems to be no sense that sugar and wheat products are bad for your health because of processing etc..., but rather, stay away from sugar, wheat (and fruit!) because they cause weight gain. And here - eat all these other toxic foods because you won't gain weight. Hello?. Your right - it's all about weight and not about health. I've watched my favorite gluten-free bakery change to a low carb bakery and the product ingredients quickly changed too - everything now is made with splenda and soy. I've watched my local grocery store covert shelves to rows and rows of splenda, toxic " low-carb " diet drinks and low carb bars, low-carb fast foods etc...Does anyone read the ingredient lists in these products?? I'm stunned by this raging obsession towards Atkins. It's taking over everywhere, including my coffee shop converstions!. What's going on?.
