CU - Marjie I read an interesting article today in the AgriNews. The headline was " It was just a matter of time " . Dr. Stanley Prusiner, who received a Noble prize in 1997 for his work with prions, made a trip to Washington to meet with Secretary Ann Veneman. He told her that the US testing was inadequate. She essentially dismissed what he said and he left " frustrated and disappointed " . Her position was that testing 20,000 head of cattle was enough to show the US herd was BSE free. His position was that if the testing program were upgraded BSE infected cattle would be found. Apparently Dr. Prusiner does not to the ostrich approach. In another article it was reported that 800 tons of beef by products had been placed on hold by Baker Commodities, Inc. I find it interesting that USDA assured us repeatedly that we could safely eat the hamburger from the mad cow but now tallow intended for use in soap and candles has been quarantined as has been bone meal for the roses.
