FW: Update Supplement Safety Act-Senate Campaign

From Arnold Gore:

Hi Health activists & Consumers,

It is time to re-start our campaign to get the Senators to defeat the

proposed Supplement Safety Act that will give FDA the power to remove a

supplement after receiving only " 1 or more complaints of serious adverse

reactions " . This draconian power is very likely to be used to take popular

supplements that compete with prescription drugs off the market.

Particularly St.John's Wort that competes with Prozac, Zoloft and other big

seller drugs for depression.

Senator Clinton is co-sponsoring the Supplement Safety Act s.722 AND the

DSHEA Full Implementation Act, the bill sponsored by Senator Tom Harkin to

enforce the current law which already gives FDA authority to remove a

supplement if it presents a real danger. As we see they have used it to

remove ephedra, although the scientific basis is far from established.

Senator John McCain of Arizona has now also sponsored the supplement safety

Act. I called his office and spoke to his aide handling the issue and went

over the detailed reports of the American Association of Poison Control

Centers for 2001 and 2002. And the Baylor University Center for

Exercise,Nutrition & Preventive Health Research report Analyzing the

detailes of the role of ephedra in the death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher

Steve Bechler in February 2003. The pre-existing factors throw the most of

the suspicion on poor supervision of training for a professional athlete and

ephedra was probaly the least of the contributing factors. Bechler weighed

320 pounds, was overweight and out of shape in training camp located in the

South Florida heat. He had a prior history of Heat illness in High School.

His step brother died at age 20 after overheating playing baseball. History

of hypertension and liver problems and had not eaten solid food for a day

or two. He said he would pass thebinformation on. Since Sen.McCain is a

national figure aspiring to run for pesident again, calls and mail fro

outside Arizona may weigh on his decision.

There is a new toll free telephone number to make telephone lobbying calls

to the Capitol in washington,DC courtesy of the AFL-CIO 1-800-718-1008 .

Call your Senators, especially the four co-sponsoring the Supplement safety

Act. Since Clinton and McCain have presidentisal ambitions, contact to their

offices from outside their home states may be helpful.
