Guest guest
Hello, I started taking SAM-e and MSM for arthritis in my thumb. I took 1200 mg SAMe (400 at a time) and 600mg MSM, 200 at a time. After about a week I felt extremely jumpy, so I cut back the SAM-e and eliminated the MSM. I know that too much SAM-e can have that effect. I'm wondering if the 2 supplements act in a cumulative manner and if so if I should just take one or the other, not both. The SAM-e definitely eases the arthritis. I'm not sure if the MSM has an effect. (I also take a lot of herbs and use a homeopathic cream). Right now I'm taking 800 mg SAM-e with no bad effect, would like to add the MSM to see if I can increase the healing power. Any ideas? Thanks, ellen

A very controversial subject and everyone has their own personal preference, but according to certain authors MSM usually is more effective. My guess would be that you are experiencing these symptoms because y;ou have started with extremely high doses in each instance. Every author that I've ever read has stated that one should start with much smaller doses, say one 200 mg capsule each day and continue to increase to the desired dosage over an extended period of time. I believe that these herbs can be conbimed effectively, however are you aware that SAMe may increase bipolar tendencies? We must keep this in mind as we supplment. Most people don't have any problem with it, however it may be a contributing factor. Best Regards, JoAnn
