Guest guest
http://www.mercola.com/2003/dec/31/diabetes.htm More Than One-Third of Those Born in 2000 Will Get Diabetes An analysis published in The Journal of the American Medical Association predicts that 32.8 percent of boys and 36.5 percent of girls born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes during their lifetimes. The prevalence of diabetes among adults already rose 40 percent in the 1990s, and it?s predicted that a further increase of 165 percent will occur by 2050 if no changes are made. Type 2 diabetes, the type that typically arises from overeating and a sedentary lifestyle, now accounts for more than 90 percent of U.S. diabetes cases. Scientists also predict that among non-Hispanic blacks, 40.2 percent of boys and 49 percent of girls will develop the disease while Hispanic boys face a 45.4 percent risk and Hispanic girls a 52.5 percent risk. The analysis also shows that among those who are diagnosed with diabetes at age 40, men will lose 11.6 years of life and women will lose 14.3 years of life as a result of the disease. New York Times December 23, 2003 Dr. Mercola's Comment: It is important to recognize that around 16 million Americans now have pre-diabetes and are on their way to developing diabetes. This is in addition to the 17 million who already have full-blown diabetes. So about 12 percent of the U.S. population now suffers from some type of diabetes, and it appears that the problem is only going to get worse. The most tragic part is that there are simple solutions that will prevent and even cure type 2 diabetes. When one stops eating grains and sugars and exercises, it is hard for the body to respond in any other way than to normalize its blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, many are offered a drug solution for a problem that is clearly one that requires the lifestyle modifications mentioned above. Making these changes in your life will help to optimize your insulin levels. As some people may know, blood sugar is only the symptom in most diabetics; the real challenge is to control your insulin levels. Once the insulin levels are stabilized it is common for the blood sugar to come back to normal levels. Exercise works by increasing the sensitivity of insulin receptors so the insulin that is present works much more effectively and your body doesn?t need to produce as much. Most people, especially doctors, tend to not appreciate how powerful exercise is. However, I believe it needs to be viewed like a drug--you have to be very careful with the dose. If the dose is not high enough, it will not work.
