Root canal or extraction?

over the last 7 weeks I have been having extreme tooth pain coming from the 2nd

to back upper right tooth. It started with some deep tooth decay from an old

filling that had to be ground out and refilled. Because of the sensitivity of

the tooth the dentist had to fill the tooth with a medicated filling. well the

tooth has been very painful. the funny thing is that it only hurts at night, and

it starts unprovoked no cold or hot sensitivity.

 

Well last week i had xrays taken and no root problems decay or abscess has

showed up.

 

i am just not sure witch way to go with this of course root canal would cost

more money.

 

any ideas?
