Guest guest
Staying Healthy with the Seasons From the book Staying Healthy with the seasons, by Elson M. Haas, MD (pge 133) ---------------------- COLDS If your ability to handle and eliminate waste is weak, or if you take in more than you need, garbage may pile up inside the large intestine, to be dealt with by other areas of the body. The common cold is often experienced as an expression from the sinuses and lungs, but this problem is actually related to the large intestine and to poor elimination of wastes from the body. The colon is one of the main organs of elimination, clearing toxins from the body helped by the lungs, kidneys, and skin. A slowing down of the intestine may result if the diet is high in unnatural, preserved, or processed foods; or high in mucus starches like bread and noodles; or if you are nervous or " uptight. " Then putrefaction and/or fermentation takes place, which creates even more toxicity in the system. Mucus in the intestines not only leads to poor assimilation but provides a site for bacteria and viruses to grow, just as it does in other parts of the body like the sinuses and respiratory tract. If your body cannot handle toxins through the normal eliminative systems, the excess toxins and mucus may begin pouring out through the sinuses. The pouring forth of mucus is in fact a cleansing as the body tries to get better; but a full head, full mind, and no energy may be the result until this process completes itself. You can stimulate this cleansing process by drinking lots of fluids -- water, juices, teas, and soups -- and by getting proper rest and staying warm, rather than locking elimination by taking cold tablets and eating congesting foods. Unexpressed feelings and blocked creative energies also contribute to this head congestion and can weaken your physical resistance. Lower resistance allows cold viruses to move into your cells and multiply, creating that " flu-ey " feeling. This vulnerable state can also result from overwork, mental confusion and conflicts, inadequate sleep, and from emotional stress. Illness will put you right where you need to be, lying quietly to let your head clear, and getting the rest and recharging that you need, The body treatment for colds is rest, fluids, sweats- in general, a cleansing and replenishing process to enhance elimination and gather new strength. Viruses cannot attack a healthy human organism. Often, getting in touch with your feelings and expressing them, or taking care of what you've been putting off, will also help the body cleansing process along. The prevention and cure for the common cold is to stay in tune with your life and to develop common-sense attention to your diet, your physical activity, your emotional state, and to rest and relaxation. Learning to pace and nurture yourself and your loved ones is important. Moderation is key to prevention of illness and to health maintenance. A balance of intake of food and output of energy as work or exercise will affect your day-to day health. Remember that extremes tend to create their opposites, as well. Excessive activity may require periods of prolonged rest, and fasting from food can lead to overeating. A new understanding of foods as energy, what they do, and how they affect you is very important. Learning to relax mentally and to express your emotions is vital to keeping your energy flowing.
