As a dog fancier for more than 4 decades, I support what Shirley's article says.

I am on my third generation of

unvaccinated, raw-fed and homeopathically treated dogs and each generation is

more robust and healthier than the

previous one. The one thing the article failed to mention was heartworm

preventative. I live in a swamp in southern

USA, and prior to this I lived in New England, next to a stream, and have not

to date had a case of heartworm in my very

healthy dogs. I do bloodwork annually.

The veterinary community has moved a little on the subject of vaccinations. The

veterianry colleges have changed their

protocols to giving vaccines only every three years instead of annually, and

they want to vaccinate for everything -- even

if not life threatenening. Giving vaccines are a vet's bread and butter. My

own local guy told me flat out that requiring

annual vaccinations was the only way to guarantee that he would be able to

examine a dog.

Then again, this is the same guy who was examining one of my dogs, brought in

for her annual checkup (but no

vaccines), and was telling me that ALL dogs needed teeth cleaning and scaling,

under anesthesia. He'd barely gotten

out the last word as he opened my dog's mouth, and viewed her pearly whites. He

did not bring up the subject again.

BTW, I'd like to thank the list owners for providing documentation supporting

the use of alternatives.
